  1. What's new in this coterie
  2. Old topic, but player characters are almost never going to be representative of their setting anyway. XD So what if there's more bronzes in play than blues, or more blues than greens? It should be obvious that the NPCs that make up the rest of the population account for any discrepancies.
  3. Oh yeah, that doesn't bother me at all! Strict-canon games are definitely not for me - I don't enjoy limiting my characters to specific colors based on sexuality, for instance. Some games become too codified ICly, and leave little room for interesting things to happen on a regular basis without it becoming a little over the top.
  4. I lean more towards a relaxed-canon feel, because I really don't want to keep fact-checking myself and making sure everything is completely canon compliant. I'm already anxious enough without adding THAT to the pile.
  5. How picky are you about your canon-level, when it comes to Pern games? I don't mean having non-canon colors and the like. For me, there's a point where it stops feeling like a Pern game, even if it has most or all of the markers of one (i.e. Threadfall, mating flights, etc.). It sometimes has to do with how characters speak, (using 21st century slang instead of Pernese slang for instance), or sometimes a game sliding a bit too far into the grimdark, so that some characters end up sounding like cartoon villains. Thoughts?

  7. People are the ridiculous. Honestly, that’s like saying you need to play 6 non-rider’s for every dragonrider you play! Non riders FAR outnumber the dragon riders - I think DLGtP says there are like 6,000 people in the Weyr, PLUS the dragon riders? -, but I never see THIS type of rule roaming around! NPCs exist for a reason. NPCs make up the bulk of any RP community. Got 17 played characters? Those 17 are the special characters. They shouldn’t have to be super balanced. I mean, you don’t want a ton of Sues, but at the same time, PCs are meant to be SPECIAL. Play the dumb-as-mud goldrider. Play the sloth bronzerider! I have a gold rider who is a more sexual creature than most greens OR their riders! I have a gay bronze rider mated to a male blue rider. He has aspirations to be a Weyrleader, but right now he’s just screwing and chillaxing. The good life. Why should the colour of the dragon immediately mean the character in question has to be Leadership and Important? It’s so silly. Anyway; the ones with aspirations that never reach them (or keep failing) are the best. Excuse me while I go torment my characters some more :P
  8. If any of you are like me, you come up with names for things that don't exist all the time. Be it names for boards, dragons, characters, whatever. Sometimes I just want them to be used and don't care how, so I'm chuckin' them in this thread. Feel free to use any of them - Just let me know if you do so I can stalk. <.< Add your own! Forums: Weyr there's a will there's a way Weyr all you've got DRoP what you're doing Characters: K'ik O'oon R'ro I'm sure I'll think of more.
  9. *slams tankards on table* You already know my opinion on it! That said. It's stifling, it limits creativity and is incredibly controlling. It's fairly easy to say canonically weyrs only had a limited amount of this and that and be stringent in the population you have so you have to have a fighter majority and be done with it without allowing players the ability to use their imagination. This is done for control, for admins to have a tight fist on who and when people get those super special colors. That being said, why do people put so much emphasis on the super special colors. Who fricking cares to be honest. A bronze doesn't have to be in a leadership role. A gold doesn't have to clutch or even rise. Stop making them so damn special all the time. That's what creates "shiny" chasers and fights and dissatisfaction with your game. Stop limiting your players. It stunts game growth. Game stagnating? Let your grip go ffs.
  10. This has come up a few times, but it always makes for good discussion. Do you bother balancing your site in terms of colours? Canonically, greens make up 50% of the population. For me, forcing players to have 2 greens for every 1 of every other colour seems ridiculous but some sites take it to an extreme. (Even if phrased differently. ie: Only 1 bronze per player, etc. Not that this is an extreme example.) I find it restricting. If you claim all the "slots" you have for the more desired characters you are guaranteed to only Impress the "less desirable" colours it pretty much cripples your character options. If you make a character that's a leader but you already have your bronze, you're going to get a blue or green (depending on whether or not browns are considered ranking on that individual site.) Not that getting those colours is a bad thing, but it can be... disheartening, if that makes sense. What's your opinion?
  11. I was a shiny hunter when I first started out, but now I'm trying to avoid that. Personally, I love all the ranks because I can't decide which on is my favorite!
  12. I can colour a template in easily enough and even get fancy with it sometimes. If you ever need it, hit me up. I can always use money! XD I do my own by colouring templates but I've coughed up money for personal templates in the past. I'm also conning @Aerona into doing art for my next one. If you want hand drawn ones you could also poke at her. Her stuffs adorable and she colours to boot!
  13. The impression itself is my favorite aspect of Pern. The melding of two minds is beautiful to me. There are imprint style bonds in other games but nothing that speaks to me the way Pern seems to. Aside from that, I really like exploring the imperfect political, social and economic issues that Pern gives us. Creating a flawed character in a universe like Pern is so easy, and far, far too much fun IMHO. Playing out the Faxes of the world is rewarding!
  14. Kind of a broad question, but I'm just curious--what's something you really love about Pern RPs? Running a big PC hatching, seeing whatever it is that you get when you Impress, playing out political intrigue, etc... There's definitely something pretty special about Impression, and getting a pretty hatchling, that I haven't really experienced in other genres of RPs.
  15. I like bronzes. Loved Mnementh, loved Charanth...I just love big, gentle dad dragons. That being said... I think I don't really have a favourite. I just like all the dragons. All very good snoots. I have a hard time playing golds, though. Never feel like I have a character that would really fit one. Not that I've played many of those, of course 😉
  16. I've seen this discussion on other sites but I'm fretting about it again. Do you share dragon art for hatchlings? Where do you find your artists or do you color them yourself? Normally our site has a few artists available for commission - but what do you do if all of your artists are busy or not available to color a clutch? How do you find others willing to color dragons or whers? (Even for a fee!) Deviant art has been less than helpful in being able to tell which artists are active or willing to accept commissions. I CAN color the dragons. (like a baby coloring in a coloring book. It is cute but not professional). I have photoshop and a tablet, but my skills are grotesquely lacking compared to the amazing skill we've had in clutches past so I'm feeling a little desperate. I've gone without for egg art before, but there's just something amazing about sharing quality dragon art for a hatching that I am afraid of missing out on. I need some advice and recommendations. Maybe techniques?
  17. Browns are my personal favorite and I think blues are right up there. Wingseconds and Candidatemasters FTW. For my characters I often get a color in mind and I have a hard time parting with that idea so a few of my characters are exclusives to that color, but I wouldn't necessarily call myself a "shiny" hunter so much as when I've got a specific thing in mind that's what I'm "hunting". If I have power hungry characters and a site requires shinies to be IC leadership, then I would consider myself a shiny hunter, but only because I am very active and like playing leadership characters.
  18. I love browns and blues. I have one character I want to see sit gold but my numbers are always lopsided in favor of blues it seems.
  19. Because no one is posting anything I will! Okay so, when in Pern everyone is always so power hungry, they want all the golds and bronzes and whatever ranker dragons are possibly available. Myself? I enjoy them, they can be fun but I enjoy the not so special snowflakers more. I love me some browns and blues, though if I have a person who absolutely would do best with a brighter shiny dragon I will shiny chase like no other. What are your preferences? We all don't care so please be honest. If you'd rather have a gold dragon say so! If you'd rather have a green say so!
