  1. My question is a bit connected to this blog post or to this one. Everyone knows that sometimes two writing partners have different interests in what kind of stories to write. If I don't have any interest in some aspects the others want to explore, I am not saying it, accepting to write what the other is interested in, because I am sure that, no matter how much I like it or not, it is a part of the story and therefore worth exploring for character development and/ or plot progression. As long as one of us is interested, the other can go along for the ride. I believe that even in love, in a couple, nobody loves 100% (neither 50% each to make up a whole). Always, in the moment x, there would be someone loving the other more, offering more (70%-30% or so), just for the balance to turn on the other's side next time. It is important only to be a balance - both to want to be together. Nobody counts who offers more in moment x and who offers more in moment y. In writing with a partner it is the same - always one will be more enthusiastic about one thread/ plot point and the other about another thread/ plot point. And I am always offering what I can. If this part is less fun for me, the next one will be breathlessly interesting, so I am doing both. But others aren't like me. They want to have all the fun now, not understanding about build-up and other writing techniques which exist and are used by many writers. They want to skip moments they consider "boring", no matter if they are building something else and they are useful in the story. (I say, instead "do something to make them less boring, instead of avoiding them! It is up to the writers to make a story/ chapter/ thread interesting!") They don't want to write first meeting scenes, with persons who are important in their lives in a way or another, considering them boring. I know that one can't force another to write what they don't want to write. However, there are 2 negative aspects of this approach, both impacting the story: 1) if you never show them meeting, if you never show your character's thoughts and opinions even post-meeting, if you don't want to write the meeting per se, then... not only your character is deprived of character development, but 2-3 characters at least. And is it fair? Can it ground any future relationship in this way? 2) If you never show them meeting, nor your character's thoughts and opinions even post-meeting, then if I assume what happened, it might be called godmodding instead of guesswork. At the same time, since this meeting happened (albeit offscreen), since your character and mine live in the same house for a period of time, it is important for my characters too. How can mine show the impact of the meeting, without godmodding, if you don't want to say anything about it? How are you dealing with these missing parts of your characters' stories?
  2. This may seem like a silly question to some but I'm serious. My forum experience is with phpBB, InvisionFree, and Invision Power Board. if these forum programs had 'Post Templates' I would have heard about them before now. As it is- I have never heard of them until today. So, could someone please explain to me what these things are and why people don't like them? I'm curious. If you could show me an example, that'd be great. Thanks Arch
  3. Mostly, I'd like someone to explain this one to me. What is a soft opening? Why do it? What advantages/disadvantages does it have to a "normal" opening and how else does it differ? As always: Opinions? Thoughts?
  4. Good Day, I am in the process of creating an IPB site with an eye to possibly moving my Nova based game to a forum. I love the features, don't mind the fee, and have made good progress setting up the basics. The problem I've run into and just can't think of the best way to handle it is character bios (applications). Our bios (at the Nova site) are rather complex and while I can minimize some of it, I have a reason for needing the longer history timelines. I don't mind formatting the bio for my players onto a nice tabbed template, but am wary of turning on HTML as this invites malicious attacks (so I've heard). I attempted to set up applications via IPB's Pages feature, but was defeated. I understood the gist of creating the database, filters, records, etc., but the actual practice of creating a character record was beyond me. Does anyone use IPB for RP that could help me out? Direct me to a template, etc.? Share their site so I can see how they have apps/bios set up? I'd honestly love to have the bios on the "character" accounts profile page somehow. Any and all help, suggestions, and recommendations is appreciated. Warmest regards and thank you, ~ Stormwolfe
  5. My site The RPG Organization, has had a long standing rule with a 'minimum 200 word count'. This is not an outrageous amount. It is approximately half a page in a word doc program No big deal. Right? The one problem I've seen with it is that some of the members would top out at 200 and post. Maybe they'd go over by 10 or 20 words. It was as if they were thinking "maximum" instead of 'minimum.- even though it's clearly posted as minimum. Fortunately, these players never stayed long. Since being here and at the other directory sites, I've read posts with clear distain for post counts. Some admit that the moment they see the words 'post count' they're gone. My whole objective in being on these sites is to garner new members. I am willing to do what it takes, within reason and legality, to gain them. I've already posted on my site, telling my members that I'm willing to suspend the word count rule. I'm willing to trust people that they will write full / complete scenes when they post as opposed to one, two, or three sentences / 2 paragraph. If all a person can muster is a few sentences we do have a section for the purpose of collaborations. It's there for joint efforts and mass collaborations. This was intended to be a solution to the 1 paragraph posts. It usually works. A few times the length went from counting the words to the pages. The longest ones were between 5 to 10 pages. Now that's a post! LOL
  6. Hey y'all. What kind of extras do you like to stuff in those 'free for all' places to enhance your character development? I'm coding tabs for our development threads with different sections for people to put things in. So I'm trying to figure out what kind of things people may want to put in there... I've seen development used for playlists, extra photos / mood boards, thread trackers.... EDIT: For context, I'm adding a screen cap of the code so y'all can see what I mean by tabs / sections. I'm making my code into a tutorial so people can customize it and add whatever they want. Still want ideas on what I could add! Thanks guys!
  7. What are some of the best open thread starters you've seen? What is your tried and true blind opening? What suggestions might you have for people struggling to write opens?
  8. When I was debating what characters I wanted to bring back with Tally, I almost decided not to pick up one of my old favourites. Why? Because I also play his wife. Is that a weird thing? Do you get put off by players who play characters on both sides of a relationship? It was weird when it happened. The characters had some shared backstory, but they were so different. Both were also in relationships with other characters, and one even had a character made for them. Problem was: none of it would stick. The more scenes I wrote that included these two characters, the more they sort of... moved together. It wasn't a conscious thing on my part it just happened. I was so confused by it. I'm writing both halves here, so shouldn't I have full control? Eventually I gave in, and let them be. But I do wonder what people think when they realise that I write both of them, and whether it raises eyebrows. I don't really do scenes with just them, I tend to write short stories (it flows better) to fill in gaps/provide background on what they're doing. They still have active lives outside each other. But... I don't know. It could be weird. It could be seen as playing with myself. I'm not sure. What are your thoughts?
  9. I’d like to thank the people of RPG Initiative for being really awesome. For quite some time, I was struggling to find a forum (non-roleplay) community to be a part of, and I’m constantly impressed by the discussions and responses that people provide here. The content of the discussions are solid, and for the first time in a long time, I find them engaging and thought provoking. I never get the impression that people are trying to be “cool” and jump aboard bandwagons. Further, I appreciate that people have differing opinions and as far as I have witnessed, people have respectfully stated their own and questioned others’ without being pushy or using a condescending attitude. One of the things I’ve found most important over the years as a roleplayer is learning that different people come from different backgrounds and have different perspectives on everything from writing to life in general. I won’t delve too much into my personal life, but there have been times I’ve been talking to people only to realize that the ways in which we view the world are so fundamentally different from each other because—quite literally—our brains don’t process information in the same way despite having similar upbringings. It’s something that people online seem neither to understand nor to care about, and yet it is so imperative that we understand this when we try to communicate with other people both IRL and over forums. I imagine that RPG Initiative will be growing larger over time, so I ask that people keep having respectful discussions, bringing new ideas to the table, and understanding that we don’t all have to follow a trend, nor is a trend always a bad thing. Sometimes as you add more people this becomes challenging, especially when people begin to form “groups” or “cliques” of likeminded folks. Disagreeing with someone doesn’t automatically mean that they are wrong, for example, just as agreeing with someone doesn’t mean that they are right. People who speak different languages might disagree over how to pronounce, say, the letter “A,” but it doesn’t mean that either is inherently right or wrong—they are only right or wrong in the context in which they pronounce that letter. I’d like to have hope that as this corner of the RP world grows older and its members more experienced, that we can figure out how to treat each other with respect. Anyhow, with that out of the way, continue on with your discussions.
  10. So I'm pretty much the only person on my site right now. Everyone is either taking breaks or vanished. [Side note: If you're one of my members who is taking a break, that's fine. I'm just here for advice, not to blame anyone or make anyone feel guilty at all. Stuff happens.] I have one member who was pretty active until about a week ago, and then she slowed down and hasn't really come around. . . . What do I do? I'm sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. Horror isn't the most popular genre out there, but it's not niche. I'm constantly trying to fix things up and keep things going, but it doesn't seem to be enough. I've advertised, I've reached out to new members as they join to offer a hand / offer to RP, I've placed up wanted ads in places, I've asked for site feedback, I've looked for affiliates, I've tried to post my ad in different areas where horror might grab attention, I've posted in RP requests on directories, etc. I have a Discord and there are a few people who chat in there, but most of them are casual lurkers who just chill in this part of the community (which I don't mind). Every couple weeks, I'll get people who join, but then they post their app, maybe make a thread, and then vanish without warning. I haven't really had a new member who has actually been involved in the community in quite some time. I've tried to RP with myself, though I find it exhausting and I can't keep it up for too long. But this is a great site (I think), so I don't want to give up. I just don't know what to do from here. Normally my sites are really super popular so I don't have this problem, or I've already given up, so this is a bit of a new position for me. Is my site not appealing? Am I not appealing, like people are scared of me or annoyed by me or something? Have I accidentally broken some ancient taboo rule that I don't know about? Maybe people need their applications approved to feel at ease. Maybe my activity rules are too relaxed. Maybe I'm too wordy in some regard, or too confusing. Maybe my site doesn't have attractive graphics. I just don't know where to go from here, though I know that I don't want to give up.
  11. This is an observation I've made based on my current site vs others I've created/participated in over the years. DBD is the first site I've been involved with that doesn't really use post templates. We allow them, of course, but my member base just doesn't mess with them much. I enjoy them, but I don't really use them if my thread partners don't. This is the first site where I haven't had a request studio set up to make graphics for other players for that reason. It does seem, though, that sites which use them prolifically attract more new members; and they seem to bring them in more often. So my general question set is: Do you use template use as a metric for joining a site? Are you more or less likely to join a site that frequently uses post templates and graphics? Why? Does having studios that take graphic requests increase your odds of deciding to join a given site? Have you made similar observations?
  12. Came up in another thread, and I'm curious! To clarify: this thread is about romantic/sexual relationships. Not friendships/platonic relationships. Do you plot relationships? How do you do it? Do you plot characters as being Meant For Each Other, despite not having met before? Do you make characters specifically to end up with each other? Or do you prefer to play them off each other first before deciding? Do you Decide, or do you just let the story take its course? Do you have relationships that aren't healthy or that aren't intended to be Forever?
  13. A thought occurred to me some time back while browsing TvTropes - why is it that I've never seen a deiselpunk RP setting? I've seen countless steampunk RPs on Gaia and other sites. I've even seen some "clockpunk" (think Da Vinci on steroids) settings in media, like Wakfu and Avatar: The Last Airbender, but haven't yet seen then in an RP. What other settings appear to be damn unicorns in the RP world?
  14. When you join a new site, in what manner do you want to be included? Describe the ideal behavior you wish the staff and other members to show you to help make you feel at home.
  15. Hey peeps, This is more or less a question of curiosity for myself....cause am well bored dammit! What do you guys think the most popular plotline in role play is? I don't just mean "romance", "apocalyptic" . I want specifics like love triangle, best friend turned love interest. Lastly what is your favorite type of plotline to play? Some of my personal favorites are complicated romances with a lot of build up or darker plotlines with a heavy power struggle.
  16. I've been thinking about this because I wandered onto a site with a specific Canon in mind. I noticed that said canon had a wanted ad attached. So I looked at the wanted ad and it had ideas and plots I wasn't interested in. So I guess my question is as an admin: do you restrict characters to match wanted ads? As a member: Do wanted ads for characters make you want to play? Do you like when they have plot ideas, or just when it's like "I'd love to see __". How do you feel/react when someone clearly doesn't want to run your plot idea (i.e. you ship stony, they ship stucky), but takes a character you love. (I'm gonna just toss out that for the sake of this thread, you can assume the player is a good writer, plotter, etc. They just don't want the plot you mentioned.)
  17. Hey! First off thanks for dropping in! Hopefully am not the one and only lost soul searching for answers about discord. I'm ridiculously new to discord and have zero clue about how to use its features other then the obvious voice/text chat. I made a discord after noticing the popularity surrounding it on numerous rpg sites and now I have no clue how to fully utilize its use. Which leaves me floundering around like a fish out of water. For example what is a bot? Why are there so many of them? What purpose do they serve? Also how do you get more discord members? Can you advertise your discord serve like you do for RPG sites? What I mean by this is there something strictly designed for discord ads? Thus far I have been following the very mature rule of monkey see , monkey do when it comes to my serve by simply adding my discord link along with my site ads. A few other questions are is there anyway to delete messages as a whole, rather then one message at a time? 😒 Whelp, I think that about covers them for now, not that I won't have more later 😂 Again thanks people for anything you can contribute! -CL
  18. So I recently left a roleplay community because an admin was sorta an asshole to me. I got a standard PM that said "we're doing an activity check" and I asked "well do you have a list so I can know if I'm a culprit" to be told "NO!" just to get a message a day later to tell me "yes you're a culprit, stop being a dick". To me I am actually more upset that they couldn't just outright tell me when I asked them to tell me in the first place and it's actually what upset me and made me tell them I was leaving fully in the first place. What the point of this is.... why do we beat around the bush? Why do we sit here and try to make nice when we know what we mean? We mince words when we all are here for direct and accurate words? As an admin do you really tell the people that are upsetting you why/what they are upsetting you on? As a member do you appreciate or get upset when an admin is direct with you? Anonymous poster hash: a77f4...15f
  19. I've brought my baby back online after four years hibernation. It's super exciting, and I'm ecstatic that so many of our old crew have chosen to come back. It's actually floored me how much support we've got. Naturally, there are those who don't have the time, resources, interest or desire to play the characters they did four years ago. In one case, a player who chose not to return had characters with intimate connections to many of my characters. This meant I had to consider her characters in updating what mine had been up to over the last four years, and how those situations had changed. I didn't want to write those characters out of the histories, as there were still more characters that were coming back and getting the stories straight would just be a nightmare. I spoke to the player and she offered me the ability to have those particular characters adopted by other players. I declined the offer---I feel there's way too much history for anyone to be expected to cover, and I didn't think anyone would do them proper justice. So my question is: Have you ever been in a situation where you had to exit another player's character from your character's story? How did you go about it? I feel... very rotten in situations where I've had to portion blame for an argument/break up on a character that can't defend themselves. I've tried to make both sides as blameworthy as the other, but at the same time I don't want to throw my character into excessive turmoil for the sake of a player who isn't coming back. What are your thoughts?
  20. I have a problem. There is someone on this forum who knows very well about this problem. My problem is I have no self control when it comes to making new characters. None. Not even a tiny bit. More specifically I can have upwards of 15-30 characters on a single board if I'm truly putting my all into a forum. You know I'm very much into the setting, people, and play, when I start going buck wild with character creation. This is also why I -do not- join sites with strict character limitations.I absolutely, one hundred percent, hate to be limited in any way, shape, or form in how many characters I can have. I don't have an issue being told I have to have so many posts on the previous new character, or that they all have to be active to a certain degree, because, usually, all of my characters are active to some degree..yes...even if I have 20 of them. What is your stand point on this? Do you mind being limited? Do you prefer the limitation? Why? As a staff member do you prefer to limit your members? What is your reasoning behind this limitation?
  21. Sunny: How many members do you have on your forum? O: 'Souls has about 70, with 177 currently active played characters.
  22. How do you feel about lurkers in your rp? I'm talking about the members who joined the forum (or other form of rp), but never really made the effort to create a character or join in the community. Members who login every few days and just sort of...sit there. Maybe they're reading threads, maybe they're not, but they're just kind of...there. What do you think about them? Or ave you ever been an rp lurker? Have you liked an rp so much that you wanted to be a part of it without actually writing in it, so you joined it and just let your account sit? What would make you do this? I ask because we recently had one on our site, and now we might have another, and I'm not sure how I feel about them! Should I feel flattered that we write content worthy of having lurkers who actually register? Should I be concerned that maybe they're stealing content? Maybe they joined so they could get alerts when topics they follow get new replies! Or maybe they're taking codes and content that aren't available to the public. It's impossible to know for sure, so I don't really have an opinion, but I'm curious about what others think!
  23. Good Day, I would like to get some feedback and discussions on RPG management best practices. We have done things a certain way for so long, I feel like my sites are getting stale. I run a western set in Hollywood reality, a fantasy (blend of numerous fantasy genres), and a Hollywood 1980s style action-adventure set in current time. We're a very small group of writers and most of us are at all of the games. The lore is minimal at the western and action adventure but there's a massive amount of reading before joining the fantasy. How do you use Discord for your sites? Especially for Nova since it emails out posts to members so it's easy to see tags and whatnot. Having seen the thread about fast post replies, are tagging or posting requirements a thing of the past? How do you keep your players motivated or is it not an issue? I am hoping this thread will provide me with some inspiration. I can tell from reading the various threads here and participating in some of the discussions that I'm very old school! Blessed Be and Warmest Regards, ~ Stormwolfe
  24. I think we can agree that roleplaying is for fun and isn't a competitive event. But what about improving one's writing skills or expecting others to be good writers? As a roleplayers, I don't see much discussion or emphasis in techniques and improving writing skills. We talk about making better characters or describing the characters' surroundings or the age-old "quality vs. quantity" argument, but the only time we ever get into being a good writer, it's encouraging things that DON'T make someone a good writer. For example, going in-depth with description doesn't make you a better writer - it allows the other players to understand the setting or character background more fully. Sure it has the potential of making somebody's writing better but it doesn't really improve one's ability to write. Instead it's a blanket statement that is expected to work for every writer in just about every scenario. I'd love to see more emphasis on grammar, diction (making word choice appropriate for the character/scenario), not telling too much, flow of sentences / sentence structure, narrative, etc. These things are incredibly important for writing and they're so often overlooked. There are other topics that are more specific to roleplay (ex: how to make characters important without stealing the spotlight, or how to work on character arc / development through roleplay posts) which would also be really neat. Even though this is just a hobby, we can improve our writing, too. I think people are so quick to brush things off because "it's just a game and people don't want to stress about things" which is true. But even with other hobbies, you still push yourself to become better. No one wants to paint for years and never become any better. Sure, you can switch types of paints and canvases or explore other topics to paint, but you don't dismiss improving your painting techniques because "it's just a hobby" and whatnot. I've considered making documentation for the RP community focusing specifically on writing techniques, but then I fear people would expect me to be a really, really good writer. I'm pretty mediocre, and I try to get better, but I don't think I have the skills to be telling others how to write. It's a pretty tricky topic. I love playing with a variety of people, and with that comes a variety of skill levels. There are level-specific sites, but those are most often based on quantity and how well you can describe your environment, not actual writing skill. We say quality over quantity but we don't talk about how to achieve quality or what it really means. Thoughts / ideas / insight / experiences? It would be awesome if we could explore writing skills in the roleplay world.
  25. Lately I've been itching, and it's something I've scratched at before. My problem here is that I itch and want, but when it comes down to actually joining another site I just can't ever seem to become actually invested in the people. I'm itching for something new,a different scenery. Somewhere with a new storyline, and atmosphere and genre. I don't want to give up what I have, because I adore what I have, but what I need is ...something...new. How do you deal with these urges? Do you just go out and join something new? Do you make new things? I'm getting itchy and it's driving me batty. Making me antsy and just all around causing a loss of muse.
