  1. This is an Avatar Specific Topic Your Graphic Mod here is working on an Avatar dump for the pre-made graphic section. These will be free use for players to use for whatever reason. This is a quick little survey to find out what kind of things people would like to have available here. Things like signatures and site banners etc will be included eventually as well. What character type depictions are you interested in (i.e. human, dragon, mermaids etc)? Do you prefer complex or simple images? Colorful or black/white? Any playby recommendations? Any images you would like to suggest?
  2. On a sort of related note - if you've had a player who has pushed you to the point of uninviting and / or whose pre-teen temper tantrum and strop off has left the staff breathing a collective sigh of relief - and you then find out / get told / see / whatever that they've joined another site. do you warn them? Does how well you know the site owners / admins make a difference?
  3. I'm just curious. What do you guys prefer in both roleplay sites, and in your own character-making? Do you prefer to rp as a canon character from animes, mangas, shows/movies, etc? Or, do you favor making your own character from scratch? My personal opinions is that I steer clear of canon, only because I don't want to feel that I am changing someone else's character, or I am not able to stay 100% true to said character because they aren't mine. If I can make my own from scratch, I can make them in my own image, and roleplay them any way I want, so I guess the creative freedom attracts my interest more. However, I don't judge those who love canon, more power to them! How about you guys? I'd really love to see what you all think! 🙂
  4. Yep, Tumblr today announced that on December 17th they will remove all adult content from their site. This could potentially affect those who roleplay on that platform. Tumblr has slowly been adjusting their policy move the last months but this seems to be the final nail in the coffin for the adult content on the platform. What other platforms could be used in place to Tumblr? And with this change coming rather soon, how would admin and players go about moving an entire community quickly?
  5. I am working on the reboot for my swords and sorcery site which means I am wading through our old lore documents. My initial goal was to pare the lore down to one document per species / race. However, now that I am into it, I am starting to feel that is not feasible. The site draws its inspiration from many genres. However, original ideas are blended in. In the past, we were told that the amount of lore that we had at the site scared people off joining. Therefore, I undertook doing lore revisions to make the site more appealing. Now, however, I am finding that cutting out information makes the species or race feel very two dimensional with no depth. Here are my questions...and my answers. I still want to hear from everyone else since obviously I would join, it's my site and I am biased! ;) If you went to a site and saw that there were 3 to 5 short documents to read about a race or species plus a Beginner's Guide for each one, would you still consider joining? How much reading is too much? How much is too little?
  6. Does anyone as a rule adopt preconceived characters they see on the forums they write on? If so, why and what were the pros and cons of your experience? Reason asking is of all the forums I've been on with adoptable characters available I've never actually seen one picked up. I myself prefer going OC because of my own control issues. Beginning to wonder if its worth the effort of putting up Want Ads for them. Also, apologies in advance if this topic has been done before. I did a quick search but didn't see it.
  7. I've been thinking about triggers and how stressful I find some of my characters to play on sites that require trigger warnings because ... they just have so many potentially triggering features that I am not sure if I can catch them before they occur. And I suddenly wondered why do we not mark characters. In other words, if I have a character who is prone to TW: incest, rape, homophobia, racial slurs, child abuse, sexual abuse, why aren't we marking HIM as a potentially triggering item as opposed (or in addition to) thread events. Partly I'm wondering this because I have another character who is prone to panic attacks. I can't tell you at the beginning of a thread if he will have a panic attack, but when they are happening, they are happening and unless we end the thread we have now stumbled upon a triggering topic. So I guess... what do you guys think about this idea? Would it make it easier for people who do have these kinds of sensitivities to be able to (give or take) black list characters who are just walking, talking triggers for them? Is there some advantage to specifically marking each and every thread this character goes into?
  8. when thinking about it, I found it hard and frustrating on finding genres that fit my rpgs perfectly. they feel so unorthodox that they end being a little too original for this directory. in fact, some time ago I pitched an idea about an rpg where you play as a bug/humanoid arthropod. one user stated it was way out of their comfort zone and i fear it might not catch on compared to the several fairy tail or harry potter. things, i hate fan related things based on popular media. i don't car how original your harry potter thing is compared to the rest of the pack, I'm not interested nor will i ever be. it's a shame, it's very hard to find rpgs that actually interest me that aren't reliant on using familiar characters or settings we grow up with. eventually, i shuttled down one of my forums since i personally didn't see the idea working. Not many people are as passionate with bugs as I am or are absolutely scared of them. even when i make them look cute, humanoid, or not as scary, you got some jerk who says "nope" "ew" "or "kill it with fire". sorry for the rant, i'm not mad at how the categories work but i can't seem to find any genre that worked for me. so i guess I'm gonna do a bog standard rpg that takes place in a cyberpunk fantasy world with superpowers or dragon riders rpg. both which are done before.
  9. Happy September! (Yay the start of my favorite month!)... as autumn approaches, and also the 1 year anniversary of my own site, I'm trying to come up with an idea for an event or two to celebrate and involve as many of our characters/writers as possible. I've noticed that our "in character" group threads/events tend to get more participation and completion than our AU events. So while AU is easier to include everyone, it might be a bit more fun to do a few separate in character threads in different locations. We are a LOTR site so any 'medievaly' ideas would work... granted I would also love to hear ideas across the board of what other types/genres are doing 😄 . For us so far, a 'masquarade ball' comes to mind maybe for elves or Dol Amroth... a couple of our locations could do something like that. Maybe some creepy giant spider thread in Mirkwood, or ghost of the Dimholt sighting in Rohan. If we'd had more hobbit characters at the moment I thought it would be funny to do a "clue" style 'who stole the pumpkin' thread... unfortunately, maybe we'll tuck that idea away for next year lol. Then there are those challenges where given a wordlist to use. Maybe an autumny word list. Or a Halloween one? Or both. I don't know, does anyone else have any ideas! I need to get on top of thinking about it so I can announce that something is coming around mid month and get people excited lol. We don't have a points system so I don't know what I'd do for people who participate. Maybe a tiny little badge for their bio? We haven't done anything like yet but I was thinking it could be fun for those people who have been with us since the first couple months to get something like that. But maybe participators could get a little badge too.
  10. You ever met that one player who just left everyone speechless, and not in a good way? Maybe you're not even salty anymore, maybe you're even impressed by the sheer magnitude of their temper tantrum. I met someone like that on another site I was on. I'll change some names and pronouns around. I was running a roleplay and this one player, we'll call him Sequoia He was outgoing and clever, and enthusiastic about the story I was setting up. This was a year or so ago so I don't remember all the details, but he got into a fight with another player in a different RP that was hosted on the same site. It was something about age - he wanted a thread to be 18+, but one of the players turned out to be 16 or 17. The site staff weren't going to do anything because this was Gaia Online (It wasn't actually Gaia, but it was a pretty similar site in terms of style and content) and it was a PG-13 site so like... are you really going to waste time checking if users are over 18 when there's no R-rated content on the site? No, of course not. That's dumb. But Sequoia, that magnificent fucker, went Full Stupid. And you never go Full Stupid. I saw the fallout in the OOC thread, I wish I had screencaps. He had a tantrum of epic proportions over the fact that some teenager on the internet dare lie about her age on a website where there's no consequences as long as you're at least 13, because there's no goddamn premium content. He ragequit the site that night and I've never seen him since, which is a shame because my thread was gonna be bangin' and he had a great character and fantastic writing voice. So yeah, that's my story. What dumb shit have you witnessed?
  11. Whether pop culture based, book based or what have you. Are there any style of board you are legitimately surprised you haven't seen around? Or, at least, that there aren't more of? I'm shocked there aren't tons of Wings of Fire rps out there.
  12. Everyone has different preferences when it comes to how strict the activity rules of a site they'd be interested in joining should have. Personally, I like the 'one IC post per week/two weeks' rules, but that's just me. I consider that my happy medium for not being too strict but it also doesn't leave me waiting a month plus for replies. I know some people do this and enjoy this, but I'd just lose interest/forget what was going on. So what about you guys? I'm curious to read everyone else's preferences & see what might be the most common!
  13. Wasn't sure what prefix to throw this under... it could fall under either. Can anyone tell if a site will last these days? Its hard to look at a site and know they will be around for years to come when the overall lifespan of new role play forums is generally a few months. What do you look for in a site that makes you think they will be around for a long time? Particularly when a site is under a year old? It always seems to be a gamble when joining and perhaps it always will be. But for sites that have been around for a year or more, what do you think keeps them going? It doesn't appear to matter how much work someone puts into it, I have seen some brilliantly planned sites go down in an excessively fast rate upon opening date. What is something that can kill a site when it seems to have everything going for it?
  14. I have a Hunger Games site that is currently on hiatus as I get stuff pulled together IRL. As I'm trying to do a few updates in this time, I've also been thinking about the plot. Panem is such a depressing place by nature, but I'm realizing that I don't want to have to roleplay depressing stuff all the time. Like I can have happy plots with my character's family, but the overwhelming shadow of the family member's death is a bit heavy. It's Victor-centered and takes place in the Capitol. What do you guys do or recommend in these sorts of situations? My site is AU and I dont mind breaking canon a bit as long as it's not unrealistic. One thing I don't want to do is make some "happy place" section outside of our current playable area (ie: the Capitol) where characters would be spread out too thinly. I'd love to hear your ideas and suggestions, or how you have handled similar situations in the past.
  15. So, when I started roleplaying at the tender age of 15, I started on Gaia Online. Now, I don't know about you guys, but over there, almost every GM put romantic alignment on the character sheets - even in stories that aren't necessarily romantic. So my question to y'all today is: is it important? Is it important to you as a player? As a game master? How critical is it that we know whether a character is single or taken, gay or straight, transgendered or not? Are there genres in which it's important to denote whether a character is aromantic or asexual? Does having this information add or detract from your roleplay experience? Be honest! I'm not gonna judge you for needing this info for trashy romance RPs! That shit can be fun! Me, personally, I don't typically enjoy romance stories, so I don't join them, so I never really consider the romantic or sexual alignment of my characters.... Except for the one arranged marriage RP I ran because that was fucking hilarious.
  16. Inspired by this thread. What kind of player is more annoying to you? Type 1, who uses open rules to crash threads and insert their character as the biggest, baddest, most unbeatable fighter who will start a fight for no reason and win always because they say so? Or Type 2, who uses consent rules in order to let their character be snarky, aggressive, and even do things that are wrong, but will never ever give permission for their character to get so much as a scratch unless it follows their narrative? I feel like, for staff, type 1 is easier to deal with. You tell them to quit it or leave. Type 2 is weirder because the allowance for this kind of behaviour is built into the site. As a player, I can just stop playing with either type, but I definitely find playing with the Type 2 to be more annoying because GOSH, you can't just ask for a punch and then call me rude for following through.
  17. How do you feel about people sitting in your cbox (or whatever) and chatting before they have a character? Not asking questions, just participating in the ooc communication.
  18. So we've had a poll on trigger warnings sitting about for a good bit now. So, as a player do you appreciate or despise trigger warnings? What's your reason?
  19. So when I had first started getting into RPG I noticed that sandbox RPGs were the most popular. Everyone seemed to want to do their own thing without an overarching plot to hold them back. These sites had plots to set up the settings, but their plots weren't stories that would be carried out. Then it seemed that recently site-wide plots gained popularity again. So what are your thoughts on overarching plots? How does your site progress the plot and how often? I personally think it is pretty awesome to have an overarching site plot so that your members can shape the site a bit. I've seen some sites be very strict on how the site plots progress, and I am not sure how I feel about those quite yet. I'd love to hear some thoughts on the subject though!
  20. I know many RPGs where the characters advance in the story. They make their mark upon the story, progress and get promoted for their achievements and reliability. Some people love this. It is a way to reward fidelity, creativity, involvement in the story, and at the same time to show the fact that no story can remain static. Others don't like it. They want their character to remain the same way as it was initially designed, and for them a promotion, no matter how much it makes sense in the story, means their character turns into someone they aren't interested in writing about anymore (no matter that the promotions always do show new paths to explore, and the characters have further potential for development in their new positions). What about you? Do you like promotions or not? And why?
  21. Hello, it’s been a while since I’ve been here. I thought it would be fun to start a YouTube channel about roleplaying: what it is, how to start, character creation, etc. It’s still very much in its early stages. What I need now is are screenshots from various roleplays and the different parts of them (front pages, characters, rules, etc.), depending on the video topic. I’m asking about those interested in allowing me to do this. If I use a screenshot of your roleplay, I’ll provide a link back to it, of course. If you only want certain parts of your roleplay used, then let me know the restrictions. You’ll get a bit of free advertisement, and I’ll get what I need to make better videos. If you have ideas for video topics, let me know. Thank you. 🙃
  22. Hey all! While being in this field of writing now more than 15 years, I have come to notice for the last couple of years that recruitment is getting more and more difficult. While my writing group is Star Trek, I made it even more unique that it is only a Cardassian character play by (specific species in Star Trek). While I get praised for trying it, the recruitment for it is quite difficult. Now the most common thing I noticed is that players simply reflect my website as "Oh it's not active, the last story posted was a few days ago", while behind the screens (when you need to log in) there are a few stories being written. Now my website is Nova based, but I bet this problem also occurs on forums and blog software sites. What is your approach to tackling this problem?
  23. Are they the world's specific holidays, or the seasonal holidays of real time? I had seen both. On mine, If the holidays are in real life, but they are far away in the story time (e.g. almost never Christmas or Easter or others align in real time with the story calendar), we have in character song dedications, in character gift offering, traditions discussions, greetings. We had contests too sometimes. We have celebrated Christmas, New Year, Easter but also local holidays like Thanksgiving, Halloween, March amulets, St. Valentine's day. If the holidays are in the story, our characters celebrate them. We have celebrated both the ones which exist now too (Christmas, Easter, New Year, St. Valentine's) but also the Medieval ones which now are less known (Twelfth Night/ Kings' Day, Mardi Gras, May Day, St. John's summer fires, Michaelmas), with threads happening during the holidays and sometimes with graphics derived from them.
  24. Back when I first started RPing, members would utilize NPC characters for just about everything. Fighting opponents in a thread starter; filling in members of that fearsome bandit band your character leads; family members; quest givers and plot McGuffins; you name it. If an NPC (or 10) were needed in the thread, the members themselves would attend to this by, well, controlling the NPCs themselves in their posts. Then, somewhere, I don't know if it was because of games where staff controlled all aspects of the story progression or too many arguments over control of the NPCs per thread, things changed. I noticed that people just....stopped playing NPCs. Anything that wasn't a player character ceased to exist. On an old site, I once found myself as a staff member pulling "double duty" when it came to posts because not only did I have to keep up with my actual characters, but I also had to do 100% of the NPC legwork for the rest of the memberbase. So, my question is, what are your feelings on utilizing NPCs on a site? And whose "job" is it to manage the RPing of said non-characters? Are staff supposed to treat them like running a tabletop story and control 100% of the encounters? Or should members be pulling a little bit more of their own weight in controlling what happens in their character's stories?
  25. On fandom sites the conflicts come with the fandom: The X-Men and Brotherhood (Xavier and Magneto) conflict comes with the territory on an X-Men board, for example. But on original boards, I've seen time and again the creators of the site start the board with antagonists and conflicting factions already in place, and put the membership of these groups up for adoption as playable characters. But I've never seen that actually work. I was on a site for two years, they had rival criminal groups (a mob boss criminal and a charming rogue Robin Hood-type as the canon leaders of the gangs, who were bitter enemies) but in the time I was there, three different players picked up the mob boss character and then disappeared before the month was out, and the charming rogue was only played for a couple of months before that player also disappeared, and there was never a time when both characters were played and active at the same time. And yet, the admins kept pushing the idea of these two gangs having an active conflict. On another site, a fictional town site, the admins started the game with a sinister company/business menacing the town and warping the town's officials, and set them up to be baddies. The company and its managers were adoptable and players could join them. But no one ever did and no one joined as the town council or mayor; so, the corrupt town officials aspect never really went anywhere. I see new sites just when they are just starting and many of them have staged tension : rival gangs and such that people can join. But given my experiences, I wonder if those setups ever really play out or does it just fizzle. I think a more sensible plan would be for the admins to create tension and drama based on the characters that join and are actually active rather than pushing players to fulfill the storylines they create.
