  1. Hey Everyone, So something I've been trying to figure out as far as a pattern goes is if there tends to be slower months in role-play over others. Our one site has been opened for over a year now and I didn't bother to mark anything as such last year and now I'm kicking myself as everything tends to be a bit slower right now [I'd say August-now has been the most noticeable.] I'm going to assume its the summer months as we were doing super well over late fall-late spring/early summer. Everyone on vacations, out in the sun, etc. Even advertising has been pretty dry. But I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed anything as such and the best way you guys handle it during the 'dryer seasons' of the year.
  2. What are some posting incentives that a forum might offer that makes you eager to post/write? I've been wracking my head how to get my free form RP board members to come along and post and I'm pretty sure I am missing something, somewhere. I've got a board wide event right now, and am working on medals for various thanks for participation--but I'm not getting too many people posting or playing yet. What is it a forum can offer you that keeps you wanting to post?
  3. Hey all! While being in this field of writing now more than 15 years, I have come to notice for the last couple of years that recruitment is getting more and more difficult. While my writing group is Star Trek, I made it even more unique that it is only a Cardassian character play by (specific species in Star Trek). While I get praised for trying it, the recruitment for it is quite difficult. Now the most common thing I noticed is that players simply reflect my website as "Oh it's not active, the last story posted was a few days ago", while behind the screens (when you need to log in) there are a few stories being written. Now my website is Nova based, but I bet this problem also occurs on forums and blog software sites. What is your approach to tackling this problem?
  4. So, obviously, you always start small, and after moves and big changes you can expect things to be a bit slow. However, I have noticed a weird pattern in people looking for forums. They don't want to join a small forum that's slowly growing, because they want immediate booming activity. But, how does a forum create that "booming activity" when people refuse to join and help them grow? We have advertised like crazy, affiliated like crazy, and we are still finding that people will browse the forum as guests, but never commit to joining. Those that do join, leave because they don't want to actually put in the work of being part of a growing community. We just did a huge move from Proboards to jcink, so of course, slow periods are to be expected. But my staff and I are pulling out at all the stops to do our best with keeping activity up, creating new threads, events, and perks of joining, but it seems to not be working. Are people not into multi-genre roleplay forums anymore? Is it more now that people want something super specific? My thoughts on creating a multi-genre, open world roleplay forum were to give people the chance to do ANY genre and ANY kind of roleplay they wanted. But, we can't show these potential members activity, when no one even bothers joining to try it out. Everyone has lives outside the forum, so we can't expect the couple active members we have to put the forum above their real lives because that's just ridiculous. So, how do we become an "attractive" forum, to entice people to ACTUALLY register instead of just viewing as guests? Any advice would be awesome. Thank you so much! ^^ ❤️
  5. ASK MOUSIE ANYTHING I pretty much haunt boards like this in search of places to give advice, and new documentations I can write. I'd like to get an idea of what questions people have about anything/everything related to forum RP that I might be able to help with. Thus, I invite you to ask me anything! No question too silly, too dumb, or too out there. Feel free to use the anonymous function if you're not comfortable with having it attached to your username. I've been a board admin since 2003, with a break there between 2013 and 2017. During that gap, I continued to roleplay and manage communities---just outside of the forum RP space. My longest-running RP forum was seven years from opening to hiatus, and has been brought back online because it kind of felt like I was missing an arm or leg without it. In that time, I've encountered all sorts of things: Firing my whole staff Finding my "board philosophy" Ejecting toxic members On-board OOC drama Broken RP partnerships Learning to skin.. multiple times Changing board software Adding/removing features Running contests Running board-wide plots Establishing a strong community Advertising like a boss Surviving quiet periods Recurring ghost members Closing the board Reviving the board Investigating board issues Admin burn-out And so much more... Absolutely any questions are okay! About my board, my style, the RP forum sphere in general, particular trends, or even advice on a scenario you're facing. I'm here to help!
  6. I was wondering how people deal with members that come in just for the check, post the minimum to pass it and they go back off into the sunset? I've gotten a complaint about this due to the members in question holding very popular canons. Anonymous poster hash: ca7a5...4f3
  7. Activity checks are probably my least favorite thing to do but I have to hold them. We just turned 3 weeks old and so we haven't actually had one yet but in our rules, we say once every three months. Do you think that's fair? Also since we have a fandom board I was wondering how others dealt with canons and if they had different requirements for activity checks? Or really just checks in general. My biggest fear is someone will sign in and post in the checks and then disappear. I'm leaning towards them having a certain amount of posts in the last month, how do you guys go about it?
  8. How do you handle the dropped plots? That has always been my big gripe when someone poofs. You have relationships, plots and other interactions that are now suddenly dead in the water. its a reality of how we play/write but what do guys do when the activity check clears out half the characters. Restart the pots? Pretend relationships didn't happen?
  9. We have all experienced it. As forum owners some of us go through tons of ideas before we latch onto one that really takes ahold of us. We make forums, reach out to others, desperately try to grab for the attention our ideas, plots, stories, and forums need. Once we find that 'something' we cling to it and put our absolute everything and all inside. We spend hours writing guides, advertising, showing people our shiny new site, making graphics and adjusting skins. We spend hours RPing so it looks active, posting like a mad person in a wild attempt to draw attention. However, sometimes no matter what we do it just isn't enough. People don't bite it, they don't RP, and they don't come in droves like we had been desperately hoping, or thinking, they would. Instead we end up being the only active person, posting to no one, and advertising back to back with little to no results. When do you call it? When has it been dead enough to lay them gently to rest? Do you keep chugging along despite this, or do you finally bite the bullet and realize the dream of a plotline has simply drifted away? When it does die, and you've finally accepted it, what do you do? Do you just drop the whole thing and walk away from forum ownership, or do you try again? What has been your experience here?
  10. I have my fair share of Administrative experience, however one thing I've always struggled with is Site Events. Usually drumming up interest isn't a problem but the execution is. So I'm wondering: Have you done site wide events? What kind of events did you do? How successful were they? Do you have any site event suggestions? What's been your overall experience/What's your overall opinion? One type I usually see is a masquerade. Do you think it's a good idea or overdone? One thing I did that I thought was a good idea was like a mixed bag thing. People signed up with whatever characters they wanted and then would get randomly partnered with another and they had to do a thread. People liked the idea but it seemed like not a lot of threads were completed. Should I judge it's success on completion of overall feedback? What do you guys think of site rewards for participation? Or is just the involvement in the plots reward enough? Many questions!
  11. Don't write alone, they say. Involve your members, because RPG means interaction. Well, it means interaction between characters, and this could be achieved even if they are written by only one writer. What if the members CAN get involved, but they don't want to? I would have liked to involve them in all threads, to have characters of all kind (not only NPCs) shared, or at least to have discussions among writers even if I have to write some threads alone. They seem to simply not be interested. In this case, isn't better to write the story alone, than have the chapter missing from the whole story, and "left to anyone's imagination"? Don't we write to let out the story prisoner in our minds, and have it read by our readers, as few as they might be in certain cases? I am still pondering, in one case, if to write a thread wholly alone or to wait for the potential involvement of two other writing partners. Yes, they can be involved and I'd love them to. I think their contribution would add to the story and it could be also good character development for their own characters, if they care to develop them. This is the main issue - if they care to develop them, if they care to get involved. Because one hadn't written in his ongoing threads for 3 weeks, and I don't know when he'll write again, if he will be available for another thread and if, assuming he'd join, he'd do this thread the same thing (making me wait 3-4 weeks or more for one post). And most of the above could apply for the other too. People who post at 3-4 weeks, and in 3 weeks I can finish the whole thread alone. Decisions, decisions. I have stopped, though, with an opened thread, waiting for them to see if they want to get involved. If not, I can get ambitious and finish the thread alone in one week-end, some day.
  12. I'm sure we all know the cycle. You start a forum with maybe one or two interested parties and you start advertising your site. Meanwhile, you and your buddies are RPing and hoping that your site gathers at least a few other people to play with you! But as folks visit your site, and they see that you have only a few people playing, they say, "You don't have enough members. I'm not joining a site that doesn't have lots of members!" and they leave -- even if you and your friends are RPing daily, and in many different places! So no one will join your site because it only has a few members - and yet it can't get more members because no one joins! Aside from advertising your site everywhere you possibly can, I'm hoping we can share some ideas on how we've managed to encourage those members to consider joining even if your current member base is small. I'm wondering: 1. For those of you whose RPs have several members, how did you break that cycle? 2. What are your thoughts on individual members creating multiple OOC accounts with active IC sub-accounts, just to artificially inflate the members list? 3. If you've tried holding "Grand Opening" events or large group plots, what did you find worked best for you? 4. Do you have other suggestions to break that cycle?
  13. I admit I am confronted with an activity problem on my nearly six years old site. Most of the sites have one, at a moment or another. I feel it is something wrong with the very slow pace we have progressed with this year, and with people posting, instead of each week, only 1-2 times a month. In one year of writing, we have covered only two story months. In other years, there were three to six story months for a year of writing. If a quicker pace was possible before, and it created more enthusiasm for "the next episode" of the story, why it isn't possible now anymore? I think some people lose interest because the writing partners take too long to post. I am trying my best to stimulate people to write and be inspired, with everything I can, but it seems I am the only one doing it - and sometimes it feels damn lonely on my own site. This is when I get pessimistic and I think that nobody else cares about it, while I am giving all my best to the story and the community. It feels as one-sided as I am losing inspiration for stories I loved writing. I think this is my main problem, especially that I know this site used NOT to be like this. The community was bubbly, involved, there were people of all speeds, and the stories were written quicker... Now, they are disenfranchising from us by simply not posting and not being anymore part of our WRITING community. Being active means being connected to the community. If we, each of us, no longer feel like putting in the effort, then we have made the conscious decision to let our site die. I am always willing to make this effort, but I can't do it alone. And, unfortunately, not recognizing that we have an activity problem means not seeking consciously solutions, both within ourselves and all together. The inactivity is the problem, at the whole board level. And instead of being stimulated to be more active when others aren't, each one is complacent that "the others haven't posted either, I can procrastinate as well." Some do not even acknowledge it is a problem for the site, in order to seek solutions - both inside them and together with the others. When we can't get more writers (because, let's admit, older sites seem to be less attractive for newcomers, despite the reassurance that they are more established and less prone to disappear in a whim), the solution to keep going on is to be more active ourselves - and it is a collective endeavour. A person alone can't bring the needed activity, when the story is collective, needing various crews. Being needed is a nice feeling, and it should be one more motivating reason to find inspiration and time. (This is exactly why I am always writing more for others than alone; because I know that other people are waiting for the "next round"). I am thinking ”My posts are needed, people are waiting for me, so I’ll make time as soon as I can”. (Which may mean instead of watching a movie or of doing something else which is for free time). When I am sad, bored or tired of numbers or of drama in real world, I am starting to write, in order to get immersed in a different world. And I keep writing. But if one person not posting, doesn't lead to inactivity and site dying, when most persons on a small site aren't posting, the 2-3 who do... can they really make a significant difference, no matter how often they post? Because it is just a little part of the plots, and usually not the important ones, which get forward, and the others get waiting and waiting. I have seen this elsewhere in the past. Sites once busy, then one left, another stopped posting, if those two weren't anymore, others stopped posting too, either waiting for the others' posts, or just because - and in 2 months the site was a ghost town. And it is something which would naturally lead to the death of the site, if nobody stops it somehow. But how to stop it? What more can I do in order to make the plot running smoother, better? I really am trying my best. And maybe from here a big part of the lonely feeling... Don Quijote fighting windmills, misunderstood by the people around? I do care - about our writing community together, writing because this is what gathered us together. I can't do everything in this world, but I am doing as much as I can, and I am searching for what else to do in order to keep the community together, to keep the story going. And nobody else admits that inactivity might be a problem. I understand people being busy for a while and people having lost interest (in writing in general or in this story in special). It doesn't mean I am not regretting their good characters, their writing style, their warm presence and their interesting ideas. I do. But I know I can't fight something which belongs inside each person. If they don't have motivation from inside, to write, I can't give it to them with any outside intervention. And, in exchange, I start losing mine if my writing partners don't care about the story anymore, because I feel I am doing everything in vain, for no readers and no writing partners.
