Tumblr Is Getting Rid of Adult Content?!?

Yep, Tumblr today announced that on December 17th they will remove all adult content from their site. This could potentially affect those who roleplay on that platform. Tumblr has slowly been adjusting their policy move the last months but this seems to be the final nail in the coffin for the adult content on the platform.

What other platforms could be used in place to Tumblr? And with this change coming rather soon, how would admin and players go about moving an entire community quickly?

I don't deal with Tumblr personally so take anything I say here with a grain of salt.

But from my understanding after seeing chatter about it on a few different Discord Servers I participate in, they will not be removing or restricting written adult content. Images are a totally different story, and maybe Tumblr rp includes some adult images, I do not know.

As for moving communities quickly, I have heard a lot of people considering private FB groups as an alternative.

"Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations, are also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr." Source

As long as they're not using "photos, videos, or GIFs that show real-life human genitals [...] that depicts sex acts" they're fine and do not need to make any fast relocations.

Yeah but you know that ONE ornery player is going to post something and report you to get your roleplay taken down.

More to the point - Tumblr's staff are incredibly inept and hide that ineptitude with sweeping bans rather than attempting a robust system to deal with pornography. So absolutely, this doesn't bode well for the future of written adult communities. But no need to panic because they're explicitly in their allowed examples.

I was gonna edit this in the above, but I'll put it here instead:

Dreamwidth is looking like the best currently free option for writers who want to preempt any adversity created by Tumblr's shitty systems.

Pillowfort is in alpha currently but probably one to watch.

Thank you @Kit the Human for the clarification. ❤️ I think the worrying part is as Tumblr begins adjusting their stand on adult content, who is to say that written works may be next. But this is an issue that may come up on there free hosts as well. But as Morrigan mentioned, someone would flag an RPs content and Tumblr could take it down citing the new adult content rules.

Just popping in to warn that a lot of people are getting completely safe-for-work stuff flagged as explicit, but this is mostly images. However, I can see this affecting RP adverts and other tumblr-hosted directories.
I second Pillowfort and Dreamwidth as alternatives, but Pillowfort is currently doing security updates and requires $5 for a registration link (to keep it ad-free until they put up premium services)

I'm not on tumblr anymore, but you can't escape this drama anywhere on the internet!

I've heard Pillowfort is probably going to take up the mantle, though I know there's been speculation as to whether their domain will allow it. AO3 recently made a post about preserving people's tumblr posts on their platform. If only TOW would make a social platform. Darkcloud (warning - nsfw website) is launching a tool that will let you export all your nsfw data to preserve it. Foxsake might be an alternative to look into, or maybe Ello? I don't know their policies on mature content though, so maybe look into that first. Newgrounds is also making a comeback, though I'm not sure how suited it is to rp?

Other than those, I know several groups are working to make tumblr alternatives, like TumblrX, but they're not out yet. So just keep an eye out because we'll see those coming soon.

For fandom discussion/memes, I find that subreddits and Discord servers can fill the void. Roleplay accounts could probably migrate to Twitter -- though the character limit makes this a sore replacement.

Honestly, a website similar to Tumblr would be best. If such a site crops up in light of this drama, they'd probably make a decent following right out of the gate.
