Are Current Events Impacting Your Genre Preferences?

Now that we're globally living through a major pandemic event, are your ongoing experiences changing your roleplay tastes?

For example - if you were a fan of the post apocalyptic genre, do you find yourself still wanting to play, wanting to play more than usual, or no longer enjoying the genre as much? Is watching Walking Dead suddenly more or less appealing?

Mine haven't changed at all, possibly because my reasons for rping - escapism and collaborative writing - haven't changed either. For me it's business as usual since I'm essential personnel and have to go to work as before, so apart from the very much increased workload and lack of outdoors socialising (travelling, eating out, concerts, films, etc), the changes to my everyday life haven't been that great that it would prompt a sudden interest in new genres or disinterest in the ones I dabble in.

I agree with @Liv. It's the escapism and collaborative writing. I think a little bit too much escapism lol, but working in emergency operations I like to take mini breaks to chat or RP just to de-stress and regroup.

I wouldn't say my genre interests have vastly changed, though I've definitely found myself more keen on busier communities than I was before.

I don't think events impact my genre hunt, however....I have concerns a site of a similar genre may be met with hostility or avoidance because of real life current events.

Specifically, post-apocalypse or zombie boards. I'd been enjoying Death Stranding and Days Gone for months now, and whilst I'd love to roleplay in that genre, I'm also aware of the current pandemic and how it might potentially be 'too real' and upsetting for folks having that genre about. People may find the genre off putting and so avoid it, or just feel hostile that it's bad timing or bad taste to see a site of a post-apoc nature. I know a lot is about escapism of settings from the real life and nobody wants to intentionally upset folks.

So yeah....I'd worry getting involved in that setting might upset folk and cause problems-even if there isn't any ill-intent or ignorance about the severity of real life matters.

with the pandemic no. Its not an apocalypse in the same way that a fictional one is displayed in movies and the like, however I have seen that when events like mass shootings, bombings, racial tension-based conflict and other kinds of civil unrest happen close to home irl, that myself and others on my rps tend to get either too passionate about similar events that happen in our stories, or choose to postpone such violent drama plots because it needs space to be treated as more than mere fiction.

It hasn't changed but my staff and I had a discussion about how we would handle things. For some it's still very traumatic and the escape/relief from stress is still needed. So we chose to roll back to January and possibly skip over the months of lockdown in the state we're based in as say a blackout period. People can still post in character histories to add to their characters during that time, but we felt it was for the best to handle our modern fantasy that way. I'm curious to see how others of the genre (same timeframe) are handling things as well.

My preferences haven't changed at all, I was already very tired of the post-apocalyptic/dystopian genre as a whole 😉

My genre preference hasn't changed, because it isn't post apocalyptic. But I have noticed I have a longing for fluff threads or just general feel good threads with my characters. I want to live vicariously through them, so they're going to parks and hanging out with friends. 😂

Not really. I have very strong tastes, and not much shifts me from them. What has changed, however, is my absolute need for roleplay right now. Usually I reply once daily/every few days, but I'm obsessively replying to everything like my life depends on it. Helps keep me off Twitter and Facebook...

I don't think the pandemic as such has changed my taste. What I am finding though is since interacting with the wider RP community (it is very limited where I came from) is making me want to try different genres.

I was on a site recently that actually had a pandemic event for all of us quarantining! I found it kind of fun and hilarious personally. I know there are some people who have been getting more and more fearful of a zombie apocalypse, etc. actually happening as a result of COVID though so I imagine it would become a scarier genre for them.

It has and it hasn't. Anytime people go through a major event, be it on a global scale or something personal, it'll change them in unforseen ways. For me, I love post apocalypse and thankfully that hasn't changed. What has changed is I'm more detailed in what I do and do not want. I don't want to deal with the ramifications of this specific virus or one too similar. I want to do something different, that's what rp is for me. Experience new things I normally wouldn't or couldn't. I don't want to relive any of this scare again, it's too real and like many I'm in it for the escapism. Which is why I don't want to play out this particular event in my plays. But I can't say I've changed my tastes. Maybe I did and I'm not fully accepting it. Who knows. It'll be an interesting thing to see what people are into when the world reaches the new normal.

Well I have a bit more time on and off as I am an essential worker ( aka sacrifice) and I tend to be drawn to stories more. Of course I have to expect my time free to be on and off but I find that my muse seems pretty strong more than before.

It has not impacted my genre. So I can say that stayed the same.

if anything, the pandemic has uh.... made me want to play an apocalyptic setting more? i've been consuming media related to it pretty regularly recently. i sort of use horror and such as a management for anxiety, though, bc it gives me something to focus anxiety on? so it's probably a byproduct of that. focusing on the fake pandemic means that i don't have to think about the real one and being jobless lmao.
