Forum Nesting Levels

I can see the benefits of nesting several layers of subforum from an organizational standpoint, but in practice I've usually found that it's a good way to confuse your members and make the site look dead. I never have more than one subforum layer on a forum, but I'm envious of the sites that could pull it off well.
