When to call it quits?

If I struggle socially, it's usually not long before I'm out of there. I need a space where I can jive both in and out of character and no matter how hard I try to push it, I just can't stick around.

I've definitely stepped away when just seeing notifications for the site I co-admined gave me this gross feeling of dread. This is supposed to be a fun hobby, and OOC issues within the community is a great way to stamp out enjoyment.

- When it starts to affect your real life or that of those around you in a negative way.

Just like everything, roleplay is meant to be something positive. It's here to bring people many good things, but it can also affect a person's life in a negative way, through many various means. I'll try to list some of them below.

- When a person begins to become to obsessed with the roleplay world they ignore the real world.

- When a person gets too attached to other people within the roleplays, and can't seperate reality from fiction.

- When people are harrassed by others because of events that happened in a roleplay.

- Catfishing (People who pretend to be romantically attached to another person, but are lying because it's just roleplay.)

-Rp Hacktivists (Derived from combining the words 'Hack' and 'Activism', hacktivism is the act of hacking, or breaking into a computer system, for politically or socially motivated purposes. These people will attack anyone for their goals, and try to get them to suicide because they were hurt or dissed in some way.)

As you can see, there are some means that can lead to negative results, but hopefully that doesn't happen to anyone here...

Everything has an end, everything but me that is. I shall live for an eternity, watching as the petals fall from the trees.

I closed my site Oceans of Time because my co-admin was just never going to put in the effort that I was. I moved the idea of it to my current site as a new realm.

This is a big topic and I think there are many reasons someone might want to close a site.

When you are no longer having fun and it starts to feel more like work than a hobby is the best time to close things. I have found myself as a solo staff a lot in the past, both by choice and because staff members poofed. There's times in my life where solo staffing was great but also times when I struggled and had to close things.

Your mental health and your life outside of the screen should always come first, if that's being compromised then running a site is not worth it.

When the work and stress of the site outweighs the fun of RPing. Sure, all sites are going to be work, but if you're not getting anything out of it then why do it? If an admin is just going through the motions it will be obvious to the other writers.

Definitely when it no longer feels fun and is having an impact on real life. I'm currently in the process of closing down one board because it was just frustrating me. I have moved to a new board and for now am mostly solo staffing (my hubby is helping out, but staffing is otherwise not his forte). I must admit I feel much happier again as well as refreshed. It's nice to look forward to writing and actually having people who are also happy to write.  Given that is the whole idea, it kinda struck me that it was not the norm for a good while before, despite how much I loved the old board.

Calling it quits is hard, but sometimes necessary.

I agree with the chores statements made before. You should never feel like its ever a chore. And if the muse is no longer there and you aren't finding enjoyment then its definitely time to call it quits.

Every site shut down I've experienced has had their own unique situation. Some of them have been because of internal drama, others have been because of just lack of time and lack of interest. It truly depends but if its due to lack of enjoyment or internal drama, re-evaluating and making sure that what you are doing is for the sake of having fun and not wearing on your mental health is a must. Because at the end of the day we're not in this to torture ourselves, we're here to do something we enjoy. And we can't enjoy it when we're constantly worrying about something like drama.

If its just due to lack of interest on your part or others parts, sometimes that is unfortunately how things go. However, there are periods of time where sites are just not busy and that's okay. Sometimes there will be slow periods, so if you're invested and just worried about a slow period, sometimes sticking it out will lead way to gaining more activity slowly but surely. Like someone had mentioned before, not all sites are massively successful overnight and need some time to grow.
