Jcink Downtime

Alright, so this is technically from both a membership and adminship point of view.

HOW IN THE WORLD CAN YOU STAND IT!?

Mind you I'm a member on a site that has Jcink but these down times are driving me nuts. How do you do it?

It's not as many and as much. I can do something else for half an hour or write my posts offline (which I always do, I write my posts in word) then I come back to paste them and the issue had been solved. So it is not a big problem for me.

Ugh. Jcink goes down more than a two-bit hooker and it drives me insane. Yet, most of the sites I'm on are Jcink. Basically, I just make sure that I have owed posts saved somewhere so that I can write them even if the server is down (usually gdocs). And complain a lot when it goes down. And play games instead if its down too long. XD

The downtime is the price to pay from a super popular free host, though. Proboards doesn't go down nearly as often, that's for sure.

Mostly; I've just learned to put up with it. XD

Most times I've never noticed that Jcink is down.

When I was on Jcink most downtimes happened when I asleep or were very short (like 5 minutes). Though I think since then it has gotten worse due to the fact Jcink has become a bigger target for DDoS attacks. (Which are what usually bring the site down.) While it's true Jcink had DDoS protection services they are finite at best and can still be overwhelmed.

The worst part is that it's some stupid kid who has a beef with one board and is making everyone pay for it.

For what to do? Wait it out is pretty much all that anyone can do. I mean Jcink is likely aware of the issue and trying to fix it. But even still some things just can't be fixed that quickly.

As for why proboards doesn't seem to go down as much... Well, for one they have something like 50 servers. (Unless things have changed recently) Jcink has 1.  Which means if one server on probards goes down it still sucks but 98% of the service is unaffected. If 1 of Jcink's servers goes down... 100% of the service is affected.

Plus I'd imagine they also pay a ton more for their DDoS protection. Which means they have a lot more resources that would have to be burned through before they'd be affected. Which would be a bit harder to do. (And then on top of that it'd only hit that one server and not the whole network. So it could be entirely possible they'd just turn it off for a while and let the DDoS attack burn itself out against an offline server.)

Finally, I'd also surmise that far fewer proboards users are capable of launching any kind of DDoS attack. I mean that proboards users tend to skew younger than others and so may not have the requisite knowledge to launch an attack. (Or if they do have, they're more likely to make easy mistakes which get their attack blocked/dealt with.)

Most of the Jcink downtime is probably more to do with your ISP's DNS routing than Jcink itself.

John added a server status page that you can check in the future for the server's uptime health. You can check it out here. There's been no downtime the past few days.

That would only apply to users that use ISP DNS. I've been using Google DNS for over 15 years personally.

I'd beg to differ on the downtime. The service may not have been completely down but I got 504 errors this afternoon. They cleared up quickly but they are nuisance.

It is happening more often, but for me it only lasts maybe 15 minutes?  It really only pisses me off ifI was in the middle of CSS edits.

As I don't use jcink, it doesn't bother me that much. (Why do people prefer a host that only has one server, though, if there's more of a chance that it will cause problems?)

Before I started to pay for hosting, I had an awful experience with freewebs (or webs, as it is called now) where BT blocked access to all the sites on there which were using a sub-domain because someone had uploaded a load of porn to one of their accounts. It took ages for them to sort this problem out, too and prompted me to go for paid hosting (I cannot stand weebly because you have to use their templates and they all look rubbish).

It's stuff like this which makes paying for hosting look more attractive.

I know the reasons proboards doesn't have so many problems besides it having more servers is that they use cloudflare to try and filter out actual DDOS attacks, which is one way of managing DDOS. I don't know how much it costs but, even the free option of Cloudflare would help.

  • 2 weeks later...

I do the following:

  • Check the last Jcink Twitter update
  • Check our Cbox from my bookmarked direct link
  • Post that Jcink is down (if twitter says they are)
  • Go to word and write... no admin can be done (awww haha) if you can't get into the site
  • Write something if my muse hasn't gone offline with Jcink.

Gosh, I'm the worst when it comes to any Jcink site being down. If I'm on a site, it's because I want to get going and posting. I typically don't have anything saved for my sites to work on anything, so what I end up doing is refreshing the page every couple of minutes to see if everything's fixed.

I'll do that for quite a while before I give up. And I'll start back up if any of my members message me asking why my site is down - so really it's a never ending cycle!

I do the same @Dusty but it's aggravating. It tends to happen when I'm in the middle of some very heated conversations about plots and it's all excitement and muse and than I become all diffused.
