Lord Byron Gregory St. Laurence I
Uncle/Brother of Richard St. Laurence/Retired Navy/Architect/Land Surveys
Suggested PB: Tim Roth
Age:52-56
The story of the St. Laurence brothers is as wide as a net can cast. Why? A father was gifted with bright, brilliant young men. Other members of the family took keen interest in one another’s children. It wasn’t just rank and position they cared about, but education, preserving lands and titles for future generations, and continuing the tradition of excellence that their name belied. Where his elder brother Richard took to the Royal Navy and advisement on ships for  military and mercantile use within the British East India Company all of his days? Byron took to the other tradition of their father after his service in the navy concluded due to injury: land surveys, architecture, and  civic improvement. He is a voice for beautifying London to meet the coming of the new age, and a voice sought after for projects in the colonies to bring a touch of Europe to the far off lands. Naturally, this is wrapped in his advisement on manners to which he is sought after on. He goes to India again not only to visit his niece and meet the family he has not seen in some time, but to also take up a post among the Yorkists as he once had in Bombay. He was one of those men who gathered in chairs over dusty books on a dusty day. He also finds himself among the deeper end of the equation, with a specialty for cracking codes, a skill he shares with his sister-in-law by Richard, Liadan. The oddity of his niece’s life choices only amuses him, with his own wife being born in the East Indies, the daughter of descended rich gentry who purchased a peerage. It is said there are a few shades of tawny in her lineage, too!

Lady Katherine Anne Dennery
"Kitty Anne"/Cousin/Poet/Widow
Suggested PB: Clemence Posey
Age: Between 27-32

If ever there was a woman in the family that Claramae was close to other than her own mother and great-grandmother? It was Katherine Anne, or “Kitty Anne” as she was always affectionately called. Claramae was never afraid to laugh with her, or tell her the things she studied or longed for. She has longings, too, having treated Claramae as something of a sister due to the fact her own sister died when early childhood was just coming to a close. The epitome of the sweet, gentle woman of the day, it hides a much deeper sense of self. While much of her light can be kept under a bushel? Katherine is quite intelligent, benefitting from the family’s model of tutelage extended to young women, even cousins of differing names. She has several hobbies, including a love affair with Italian poetry and art. Claramae’s placid face are also no bother to her, for she can be very similar at times, nothing overstated or understated in expression.  She came to Calcutta with her husband who died of cholera. With her mourning at its end, she elected to continue on in life’s adventure, turning correspondence into nearness by taking up residence alongside her cousin in Waltair.

Sir Edward "Iron Hand" St. Laurence
Fighter/Friend/Cousin/
Suggested PB: Eddie Redmayne
Age:  29-35

Edward has had many adventures in life, the extent of which are waiting for his writer to fill in. However, what can be said of the son of Byron Gregory is that he had a terrible habit for getting into trouble until it damn near cost him his life. What it cost him was the full function of his hand without mechanical assists. Though he had dreams of a military career, youthful folly and the adaptability of his hand rather changed the course of those stars. He is particularly close to the St.Laurence siblings though they did not see one another near as much as they would have liked due to the business of their fathers. He was a dear friend of Claramae's brother James Paul, if not second only to both Claramae and Aurelius themselves. A legacy of James' brilliance and Claramae's cleverness with math and parts lives on in how his damaged left hand is able to move with the help of the a metal hand assist whose rings he keeps oiled so one does not here him creaking about. He turns instead to India to recover a bit of ailing health and participate in the growing of his coffers to make up for the debt to the family holdings in his house. A good man by nature, he has taken hold to the Orient with a great fever and when he is not overseeing things as a Senior Merchant for the British East India Company?  He studies Eastern Religion and Art, to which he has plans to take up one of them for his own.

Biyu Martin/Chang Biyu - The Lady's Maid
PB Suggestion:  Zhu Zhu or your choice of Chinese actress
Age: 26-32
Features in "The Lion and the Unicorn": Here

Born Chang Biyu, she is the daughter of Chinese silk weavers from Northeastern China. Her life was for many years watching her parents lay out silk worms on mulberry leaves, only to weave their cocoons on the great loom. While her mother was not literate, her father was. Both he and her brother daughter her the written language and numbers of their culture, while It would be a former Jesuit, safe to remain and teach the faith to the working classes, who taught her family of the wider world through Christ Jesus. In his lessons, he found a zealous student whom wished to learn as much of his people as he did of her own. In addition to catechism, she learned to speak French.  While her mother and father remained adherents to Confucianism, herself and her brother took up Catholicism. The name of the Jesuit who brought them in to the fold was Jon Martin, leading to the taking of the name Martin as a European surname on baptismal records.  Life did not too much change after that, until the day that Father Martin offered to take her and her brother back with him to Europe, in particular, to the seat of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Concerned for the lack of prospects for their daughter, and feeling betrayed by their son's choice of conversion, the parents let their two eldest children go in the direction of the setting sun.

The world was more tumultuous than the one he had left behind. Even greater than the end of the Jesuit Order as a whole was the chaos that the world after the French Revolution was in. It was a frightening time for Biyu, whose dreams of seeing the West were torn at the seams by the harrowing sound of the guillotine, the public unrest, and the oddity of the alien world. Still, determined to endure, she put her knowledge of French to good use. Martin managed to find his family in Paris, arranging for Biyu to have lessons in what it was to live in the West as a woman by his sister, a well to do silk merchant's bride before the family fell on hard times, bringing her to the point of companion. As much as she spoke the language of fabric, she was also taught to speak fashion, accessories, and all of those things a woman would wish to know to be fashionable. For while the world was afraid of the Revolution?  French words, French fashion, and French servants were still a sought after commodity. Even more so was one who had someone managed to learn the art of poison craft, for even silk weaver's daughters have secrets. After a time, the turmoil proved too much for her hosting family. Once they reached England, she resolved to try freedom as she would have otherwise never known it, ending up a lady's maid to a family traveling back in the direction from whence she'd come years ago. The references of her teachers had proved more than sufficient. Her command of spoken and written English grew more so, thanks to the instruction of her lady's companion, governess, and the lady herself.

Additional Family and Staff

Chamber Maid, Age and PB your choice, ages 18-22 recommended - She goes from room to room, making sure everything is neat and tidy. She is that quiet presence, and when needed? The diligent maid given leave to serve during meals, teas, or whenever needed. Where she comes from and how she came to be are the choice of the writer, but one thing is certain: she is a clever little thing, and in mentorship with the Housekeeper and Major Domo, is learning a great deal on more than just how to keep a household.  She will be on the verge of promotion through the household ranks. She speaks the household language of French well, and is learning Tai at a good pace. What does she want, what are her dreams?  Another thing that is for sure: she would have been left alone in the world had it not been for the Yorkshire Fellowship granting her a placement with such a good family. The founding family. One objective she has is finding out why her brother who came to India disappeared not so long ago, and if any foul play was involved. Ethnicity and origin story open, only requirement is familiarity with Oriental culture via exposure.

Major Domo, Age and PB Your choice, recommended rage of early 40's - later 50's for seniority. - Every household needs the faithful general to see to the Master's needs and keep the troops in line, and herein is where Major Domo comes in to play! He remains a figure who could make the rain fall from the sky with a snap of his fingers. Masters things are always where they ought to be, his laboratory and office equipped, and his effects in prime condition. He often answers to the Madame with the upkeep of correspondence, office, and laboratory items as she takes pride in maintaining them herself, but he also does so as it takes only the most trusted of servant to be near anything sensitive of politics, secrets, and alchemy. How he acquired his understanding of Thai culture and European house staffing is your choice, but he is the prime for what he does. Major Domo has a good record and is trusted among the most noble and discrete households. He served those prior until they were lost to war, illness, subterfuge etc, as he learned to serve those households involved in things beyond the status quo. Being his a curious Major Domo, he also comes equipped with a host of useful martial skills. His language fluency in English, Tai, and French allows him to whip through the main languages of the house without fail. Your choice of either: Eurasian/Full Siamese/Full Indian/European descent, raised in host culture.

Housekeeper, Age and PB your choice, recommended range of age matches Major Domo - If ever there was a general in a skirt and a faithful heart inside of an iron breast, it would be with Housekeeper. Was she wed once, a mother once, never wed? Up to you, but what is known is that she has a genuine love for the Pricha children and the Eurasian family she serves. When to take off her shoes in the house, what few rooms allow them, and the curious ways in which things are served, not served, or observed don't even cause her to bat an eyelash. Whatever the Madame of the house desires she can make appear, and is not afraid to work close with the Lady's close companion and lady's maid to serve and protect the household both in and out of the house. She keeps a very critical eye on the cleanliness and food of the household, being familiar with the English and Siamese customs of household particulars they favor, as well as things such as preferences of tea types and drinks should the lady of the house be with child. She, too, possesses a host of skills and abilities that make her perfect for a family who is involved in private diplomacy and shadow-work. Like Major Domo, she has become fluent or could have been raised fluent in the principal house languages of English, Tai, and French.  Your choice of either English/British Citizen/European colonial/Eurasian

Household Staff
General house staff of mixed genders and ages. Thai, Indian,English, and any culture of European colonial highly sought after, but will accept any character of any nationality created to fill the rolls. Opportunities for very diverse staff due to the family head being Siamese, the household having Siamese customs, and a British expatriate wife who raises the children in a balanced mix of Asian and European mannerisms. There were some things native servants would or wouldn't do based on caste/faith, and others who did everything. Seeking servants who came with them from Siam, followed from England, or have joined them in India! A perfect opportunity for those who have curious skills, half-caste due to mixed race, or born in strange circumstances to be valued highly.

Maids/Male domestics/Male Ground and Care Staff/Guards -- The positions of maids and male servants who are domestic would include keeping clean the household, kitchen, and storage area. Could work to ascertain rank For women -- scullery maids, pantry maids, maid-of-all-work to be a go-between in different areas and chamber maids. For men -- domestic range positions across the household and kitchens, also to care for the grounds, gardens, and transportation modalities (palanquin, horse, and carriage). Also seeking guards who have traveled with the family from Siam, loyal to the Pricha family, from the most low to the most senior. Private guards of English heritage are also possible, loyal to the St Laurence and Pricha family, Yorkists, etc.

Manservant Specifics -- Duties could include serving general or specific guests, answering doors, or specific errands based on position. The rank specific from highest to lowest is page (general go-for, errand boy in training to be a footmen or valet ), footman will serve as both palanquin carriers and carriage/horse attendants. Also open/shut doors, carries luggage, sets dining tables or other specific duties. Valets would be in in close proximity to the Master and important men of the family, working with Major Domo. General labor for things such as the garden and stables. All servants play a large role in the household as they are to be deeply trusted.

Barthelemy Leveque - age 54
Suggested PBColin Firth
Father/Grandfather/Retired Professor/Land Manager/Patriarch
Features in “Language and Little Things": Here

He has always been an outgoing man just as he has always been clumsy. It was said he came feet over head from his mother's womb on the outskirts of France on the day he was born. Since he found his feet? He has always been a person who enjoys taking notes at the source of what he studies to be able to make his classes that much more enriching. The son of middle-class men who had fallen on harder times, he worked for every bit of his education from his time in Catholic run school rooms clear through to University, when he worked as a clerk and assistant to professors to supplement his income. A fan of Arthurian Lore and chivalry, he made a study of the cloudy, overcast British Isles so spoken of in Le Morte d'Arthur in order to make his own accompanying notes to the French classic, ratify history, or find whom legend was based from. Despite his ability to speak several languages, he was still a man apt to get lost. While in Wales, all but running head long in to a wall for looking at her? He found his Lady of the Lake, Ebrain. Having been a widower for nearly two years, he took his daughter Aimée every place he went. Out of all his discoveries, he says the Welsh-Catholic Obray family, especially Ebrain,is the best one he ever made. She is the love of his life. Without her, he would forget his hat, where his research notes were, and how to anchor himself in to the world around him.

In China, he was charged with research, writing, and cultural transmission of ideas and concepts. While it was the mission society that sent him? It was a man who would become a friend, and later family member, Renshu Zhang, who sponsored it.  The East was kinder to him than the West. He ran into trouble during the Revolutionary years, finding it hard to teach until doing so would have meant his neck. Once his family was smuggled out of France thanks to sympathizing Girodonists, on the advice of Renshu? The family took to settling in India for the opportunities there, and it being one step closer to a possible return to China.  In the mean time, he is thrilled to see his daughter's dame school take off so!  He enjoys the life it brings to their home just as much as he does telling his granddaughter the same legends he told his girls.

Ebrain Leveque (nee Obray)-- age 45
Suggested PB: Lucy Lawless
Wife/Mother/Grandmother/Professor's Assistant/Matriarch

From Carmethanshire, Wales, this wonderful woman was the key to unlocking joy, happiness, and perhaps some common sense in the life of an absent minded professor and his small daughter.  She grew up in a devout Catholic family of shepherds and weavers. A far cry from the libraries of great noble families, she was educated by the first generation of Obray men who had gone off to become soldiers or better laymen of faith, returning as mayors, town officials, and well read sheep keepers. While she keeps a bushel over just how clever she is out of modesty, she is no one's fool when it comes to displaying it. Barthelemy tried to yell at her for blocking academics. She yelled back, saying it was far too cold to have his daughter outside without a good shawl and wool dress, and had he eaten?  Had his daughter?  He was such a subdued man after that she apologized, gave him a meal, and the rest was history. He remained in the town not only to study, but to court and marry her. His little daughter became her own, and together, they had another they named Eirian.

At first, she decried the idea that all of the men seemed to have in their heads of the entire family going to the far outposts of the world. However, it didn't take her long to fall in love with the notion of travel. Having gone from Wales to Paris already, a larger leap was not too bad to do!  She kept house, schedules, and order for every man and child within the household then as she does now.  She taught her daughters the benefit of a calm, patient hand with the right blend of cleverness, how to play piano, and started them on the course to most exquisite needle work. She encouraged them to study all of the land they could while they could, so it was she who sponsored of a sort the start of their education in Chinese artforms. Her careful hand that helped her husband make matches for both of his daughters among converted Chinese Christians, and a hand that now holds close her first, and only grandchild, Esperer.

Amiee Leveque -- age 28
Suggested PB: Zoey Deschanel
Sister/Widow/Aunt/Tutor/Teacher
Features in “Burning Day”: Here

The oldest of the Leveque sisters born outside of Paris like her father was, half-sister is a term that would never do to describe Aimee's relationship to Eirian. The two might as well have shared the same womb!  Her mother died at a young age, leaving her father heart broken. Throwing himself in to his work, she became his connection to the world at large, his littlest adventurer, his companion.  While having no memories of her own mother, she lacked for nothing. She loves Ebrain as much as Ebrain loves her. Memories of life in Wales and France are with her, though the great majority of her story after age ten began during the years in and around Peking, China. She thrived on challenges, surmounting them with a warm smile, inspiring words, and beauty. Like her sister Eirian, she is a teacher in the school and a tutor. Her list of talents include needle work, playing piano, as well as the impressive Orient skills: Speaking and Reading Manchu and Chinese, playing the erhu and flute, calligraphy, water color painting (all of the Chinese style of course) and playing Go. To the Western end of things, she also thrives in several languages and shares an Uncle's love for mathematics.

At the age of 20, she was wed to a young Chinese convert in what would prove to be two permissible marriages of this sort with her sister taking the second.  Tragically, injury and infection would pull her husband from this world in under a year's time, with no children left of the match to speak of.  While in Paris in her adult years, she served as a governess to a family found by a man who claimed to be a "Friend" but was proven wrong. She was nearly beaten with her virtue stolen. While the events of Paris have stayed with her? India is healing as she throws herself head long in to learning local languages and history with her sister, uncles, mother, and father, teaching, or chasing after her capricious niece.

Gwyilliam Obray -- age 44
Suggested PB: Dylan McDermott
Brother/Uncle/Great Uncle/Secular Priest/Mathematician/Scientist
Main Plot Feature in “Burning Day”: Here

Ebrain's brother had never wanted to be anything more than a priest, and happened to stumble in to his scholarly pursuits along the way. He had served in the Orient for many years by the time the supression of the Jesuits came to pass. It was a sad thing to him, for they represented a way of teaching God and seeing the world that did not remove a person's host culture. By the time it all came to pass, he had returned to what was now a combined home with his fellow brother in spirit, and now by law, Jacq! God works in mysterious ways does he not? Just as he joined to be friends with the man in the Orient, it would be that their sister and brother wed in the West. Along with Father Louis de Poirot, they became a trio of Jesuits who remained in favor of the Emperor. Even if they were not, by holy law, Jesuits any longer? It was what they would always be called. Skilled in mathematics and science, he took to the history of the Church in the Orient with zeal. He read through the science of the country, finding things in the East the West had only began to touch on. A man of many opinions, hit finds him authoring many books, and being in the habit of teaching older male students the art of debate.

Returning to the West proved the hardest thing him and his family had ever done. The Catholic nation of France had then become secular, the Church dismantled, and priests had become servants of the state. Beliefs once held up saw him beaten. Schools he had gone to now closed. He tutored to help the family survive, and though sworn to serve the state of France? In secret, he continued to teach catechism to those who would ask. England proved a little better, but he was glad to return to the far side of the world. He is now a priest with no real order, having taken no new vows, and is happy in secular service. Like his fellow brother-in-law, he assists the family by balancing books, teaching, and tutoring. It is not uncommon to hear him clapping his hands or going "No that is not it!" in his debates, or being toppled down by his great niece.

Jacq Gabriel Leveque -- aged 50
Suggested PBRussell Crowe
Brother/Uncle/Great Uncle/Secular Priest/Historian

Jacq was the brother far more strong, steadfast, and stable on his feet. So that he became a priest was something of a surprise to everyone, even given the birth order.  However, his love of learning was surpassed only for his love to the Lord Almighty. Missionary work became a passion of his, not only because it took God to foreign lands? But it taught people like him that the world was wide, different, and broad in scope than some in Europe would have him believe. Even for his place in the Church, he had to work as hard as his brother did to become a Professor.  When one is poor? One learns the value of hard work, patience, and gratitude. He is full of all three of these.

He never agreed with the suppression of the Jesuits, which he may call one of his greater faults given to not agree with such suppression would be to disagree with Holy Mother Church. However, it was men who complained long before His Holiness had, and men who saw fault where God might not have. Like his brother-in-law, he is very opinionated. He is apt to share them with those who will listen with an open mind, albeit with more care since his time in Revolutionary France. He agreed with the reason for the revolution, but was vocal against how it was being carried out after seeing whom it was harming. For this, he was beaten and imprisoned on more than one occasion. Now, he is less of a rabble rouser for public justice, but will help those in need irregardless of their ethic origin. Like his niece Eirian, while he respects the culture surrounding them, he finds the treatment of the Untouchables on par with the hardships faced by biblical Untouchables of the Old Covenant, and finds it sad and wrong.  On a happier note, he much enjoys his loud debates with his brothers in law and nephew in law, walks with his nieces, and chasing after his great niece much to everyone's chagrin around the entire house.

Additional Family & Staff

Obray Sister to Ebrain, between ages 36-41 - She is a daughter in the Obray family of Wales. Was she a shephard as some of the other family? Does she have a love affair with knowledge, too? The reasons that bring her to India are the choice of the writer. What is clear is that where her elder sister is very practical, able to balance her husband and houshold as a walking itinerary?  She reminds all and sundry to enjoy life, laugh, and have fun! Her sister being gone in the Orient for so many years was hard. What happened to the family in Paris harder still, but she was compelled to join them when they left Europe once again for the Orient. Your choice on if he is a teacher in the school or assistant, a Catholic missionary with the local organization, or if she comes as someone more merchant minded. She is very close to Amiee, the eldest Leveque daughter. She enjoys listening to Eirian play instruments and wonder at the world, and delights in teaching her great-niece tricks to play.

Leveque Sibling or Cousin, open age -  He or she is from a family of academics. The bite is strong. Perhaps this one is the one who was told not to be so strange. To be a little bit more ordinary. After all, the passions in the family lead them to galavant all over Europe, if not the known world. Occupation and personal backstory are open to define

Family - open to the creation of other cousins from both sides as well as sons and daughters of the priest brothers! Brothers and sisters for the elder family member! Open to the fact the priests may not have been priests in their much younger years, and would happily include their children within the present family with ease. Open to siblings for Matriarch and Patriarch Leveque, their spouses, and children. Age ranges, PB's, etc all open!

Servants & Teachers  -- a maid-of-all-work or two for the household,  meaning they help with everything from people dressing to cooking, cleaning, organizing, gardening, and errands. people to serve as assistant to the adults of the house, perhaps studying for things such as clerk positions or teaching positions. For the school, since it is growing, additional teachers welcome, especially fellow Catholics or those who followed other Catholics on mission-minded purposes! Someone to assist the family with the scheduling and book-keeping of the school and multiple clients for tutelage and book-keeping highly sought after. This person would be very important!

The Yorkshire Fellowship has its first major subplot under way, and the servants in Pricha Household could play a major role by those who desire, who pick the up!  How far would you go to create the change you want to see in the world? A British soldier from earlier days in the Deccan now looms within Vizag, waiting to seen again. How shall they react?  As the city seeks to flourish under the British East India Company rule, where will the Leveque and Obray families fit in?  All of these questions and tid-bits are waiting to be explored by the great writers out there!  Expand a story and make your own, unique one!  Plenty to fill between major characters with expanded history and characters with a more blank slate!

Le Bump!

Everything listed is still up for adoption! Stories still underway with new ones coming down the pike!  A new character is being discussed who has ties to the Leveques via Jesuits and being smuggled out of France with them. Emerys Leveque, aka Ai, Eirian's husband, is in the works.  The Leveque School is well underway, and the French are ever on the outskirts of English supremacy. What will your place be? Take up a character, one of the more fleshed out adoptables or create your own from these listings and join in the fun!
