JCink Only, But...why? An advertising story.

I didn't know it included ads for Proboards no adult content.

I always thought it was people just being snobs, lol.

When AeRo was self-hosted we would get an occasional complaint but more often than not. It didn't bother them and they would post anyway.

It's probably more proboards' users protecting their boards.

@SithLordOfSnark Closest I could find with my half assed "Meh, I guess I can look?" attempt.

Where in proboards TOS does it actually say adult sites can';t be advertised? I've been advertising my BDSM site on  proboards sites for OVER three years without an issue. I simply avoid sites that are all "OMG NO ADULT ADS." because just no.

Full disclosure, you used to ad your bdsm site on a proboards site I was staffing on and we deleted it every time. Got annoying after a point ngl.

Oh gosh these are great! Thank you!

I guess I should clarify that it isn't the going from board to board to advertise I'm pondering about, (I don't mess with that at all) but more like when someone is looking for a site. I just see, 'jcink only' and it does make me wonder--why? Because it is familiar? Because of the sex? Trust me, I don't like limits at all, and still do pay for my JCink sites just so they don't get shut down because I like going back and reading them, but it just sort of puzzles me when people can navigate directory sites just fine but will only rp on JCink?

Thank you again!!

OH!

Well, in THAT case... Because screw Proboards, that's why.

Honestly, Jcink offers more features than proboards. From premium to account switching to not having to log into weird cross-site master account.

I like having an account per character. I like being able to switch between them effortlessly. I like being able to write smut/violence/swearing. I like being able to have a built in shop. I like built in awards.

Plain and simple:

Ignorance.

It's people that don't realize that there are dozens of different forum software's out there. Bulletin Boards (the parent to what we now call "forums") have been around since basically the internet existed. They have evolved and they have become something really amazing (and not so amazing for some of them). People are afraid to figure things out on their own, why? No idea TBH. My children are less afraid of trying something new than most RPers.

It's actually the same reason that we lost people when we went from Jcink to full IPS on DF 5 years ago.

The hilarity to me? Jcink is a modified version of a software that came out in 2003. And honestly, while John does a great job at it, it's not very pretty or fancy. I'm honestly still really amazed that sites can get away with having post fields that don't have WYSIWYG editors.

This is the same problem with people that are unwilling to branch out to softwares that are built for collaborative writing, like Nova. It's new so it's scary.

To wrap up my rambling point these are just the softwares available through Softaculous to install. This doesn't include CMS' with forum type install items or any of the other types of forum softwares (like IPS that we run on) out there:

It depends on when it was happening, really, because I wasn't doing ads for a long time, at least not on my own. Plus, it's public knowledge that my memory is horrible, so even if you told me not to, I'd forget the next day.

"You" was probably wrong there, I apologize.

It would be more accurate to say that members from said site would ad frequently. I don't think any of our staff then ever went to your site and asked that they stop advertising on ours (personally i didn't gaf but the site's admin did so w/e right), but staff would just nix the ad. We were not (or at least I didn't do it) the dicks that would post back and then delete.

My reason for wanting Jcink is a little because of what Morrigan said.  I know other hosts exist and that self hosting exists I just don't want to figure them out in detail.  That's because I am lazy and I like things that are familiar, which Jcink is.  I am the type of person who has a particular item on a menu that I order everytime I go to some restaurants.  I am like that with my rp hosts as well.  I like what I know and I don't necessarily want to change that.

Same.

When proboards went to v5, I switched to IF, took me a long while to make the jump to jcink from there even though jcink was basically a more updated, friendly, active version of IF with a ridiculous ton of features.

I also enjoyed my time RPing on Acornrack/Spleafnet sites. I'll still dip a toe into site's that aren't jcink based, but when it comes to staffing I'm most comfortable on jcink. Icyboards, as much as I loved it, was so confusing, and I'm super picky with self-hosted sites I join. I've been on several great ones, but have never worked up the nerve to help staff one, much less make my own site on non-jcink hosts.

For me, its all about the look and feel of the form from a guest/member perspective that makes or breaks it.

I've always found jcink sites too busy for my taste. I have had a hard time finding the critical threads I like to read before joining on most of the ones I've visited, and often run into too much visual info in the form of links, descriptions, guide organization styles, supplementary stats, etc. I also don't like the popular skinning trends I've seen while posting ads. I've seen only 2 sites under the jcink banner that I could really figure out with ease, and those were ones which had made an effort to look  and feel like smf/not jcink forums.

From an admin standpoint, I've not been on jcink- hosted sites enough to know how it works, but I've found proboards pretty simple to manage even though I'm 'not good' at backend stuff. Mybb more confusing, but doable.

When it comes to looks and features when interacting with a site as a member, my favorite ones have actually been the smf sites I've been on, there are a few tricks I've found on those that I've not seen on any other of the hosts I've tried that made it very easy for me to find things and manage my posts. I don't see that many smf forums advertised places though, so I only have a small sample pool to draw from.

No 18+ links allowed, frequent use of 'log in  to post' accounts and broken js that makes it impossible to do anything.
