What're your red flags?

Recommended Posts

What do other players do that makes you recoil in fear? What traits for characters or plots make you cringe and avoid them? What was the bad experience that led to this?

When people obsess over a playby or face I tend to be wary. They seem to want to pair off with the person cast as them instead of the character themselves.

Asian play-by/face claims coming from a very specific type of role player.

I'm not sure how to fully describe it but I know them when I see them and nothing good has ever come from this sort of person.

The obsessive player. I get excited and I get involved with my plots etc. However there are some players out there that get so obsessed that they go to extremes when things slow down because they need it. It's like RP substitutes their life and so when your life gets in the way it's a greek tragedy.

Players that suffer from the god syndrome, shortly said... they are the best of the best and their perfect. Everyone that stands in their way is minor and should be killed in the story. I ban them with no regret, I had my encounter with these kinds of people and trust me, I spare myself a headache.

Players who keep making all of their characters rapists or pedophiles. What's up with that? (Yes, I had the misfortune of meeting a few)

Play-by obsessed people to the point where they come up to you and say "I really like your character, but can you change your play-by so we can write together?". No, I can't.

Past rape plots with "they couldn't resist, she was so beautiful" as a reason. Just don't.

People who try to spring pregnancies on other people's characters under the assumption that this will force the character to stay with theirs, when the character is not the type that "stays".

People who demand you change your character's behavior so they can ship.

People who are constantly complaining on the Cbox/Discord about how their muse won't let them post. I don't really buy the whole muse thing, but fine, to each their own. I just dislike it when people have to complain almost daily like it's something we need to hear about over and over (not "sorry, I don't have muse to post right now, will get to it when I can", but "ugh, muse, why don't you cooperate?" over and over again).

Any kind of double standards (they nitpick your character, but theirs are sacred; they take ages to post, but throw a fit if they have to wait; they can ask you to change your post, but if you ask them you're stifling their creativity, etc)

There's probably more, because my spider senses tingle in some very random situations too.

This is going to sound weird but that new member you get that asks 50000 questions that are answered clearly in documents they should have read before registering much less trying to build a character profile. In my experience they never get better - if they refuse to read the documents to get basic information about the setting / characters that are acceptable, it never fails, they will not read anything and if they eventually get through the app process, 99% of the time even their IC posts read like they barely read the post they're supposed to be answering.  Like, I like questions and I'll clarify all day long for you - but I need some minimum effort from the player, too. The docs aren't written for my health (okay, maybe my mental health, that's another story).

Basically everything Arceus said hits my flags too, tbh. I wish I could describe that tone, because I know *exactly* what they're talking about but I have no clearer way of putting it. Like it's almost a know-it-all type tone? When they've been around less than two days? I don't know, I can't quite put it into words either. but like, almost like they think they know the lore/know what will work better for the site better than... the people who helped build the site?  Because it never fails they'll yield here and there because someone talks them in circles until they give up, but they'll throw a fit about something else later, every time, because they think it should be a way that is totally removed from how the setting is supposed to be.

I may come up with more later, but here we are.

I’m a fizzler. I get way invested and then something in life makes me tumble and I retreat. It really sucks and I know it. Argh.

My flags are control freaks. My ex best friend always had to be in every plot with every character and she was anal about things I never even put in the rules cause I’m too lazy to make hardcore rules. Now I’m wary of anybody like her.

And people like the anon are huuuuge red flags for me. People who make sweeping generalizations about people based on their face choices. Bleh.

-Male players who are VERY interested in finding female players who play female characters.

-THAT TONE ARCEUS MENTIONED AHHHHH.

-Players that need their hand held every step of the way, who can't make any decisions for themselves.

-Players who basically keep tabs on everything you do. Who confront you because "I see you posted 5 times to this other person and only once to me." Like get off my dick, bro.

-Players who don't get that you have a life outside RP, and other obligations that might suck up your time.

-Players who make "triggered" jokes.

I totally understand that tone. And there's several of them!

Whenever someone pops into the chat with something like *meows* I immediately assume they are going to read nothing and vanish without getting approved.

People that whine that "all my faces are taken!"

If someone's only concern is whether or not a site is xyz thing friendly. Yes, every site is. The thing you are super concerned about isn't taboo or scandalous.

Guests that pop into the cbox and bombard you with a bunch of questions that are obviously in the guidebook. It just tells me they aren't going to stick around so I usually take my time answering them x'D

THAT TONE THAT EVERYONE KEEPS MENTIONING. Eroagkdh

People that create characters based off of mental illness to make them evil >> like pls no, just go take your crap somewhere else.

Members that constantly bump you to check their app right after you just checked it and stuff is wrong but they fixed it in like 1 minute, or to reply to their thread, etc, etc. Just hounding for you to do stuff that isn't on top of your list.

Posts where the grammar/sentences look/sound like they were made by a 5-year-old. That just irks me, when the rules state "Proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc." It makes me think they lied about their age because they can't do the proper stuff mentioned above and they didn't state that English isn't their first language.

Characters who do bad things and, when called out on it, immediately bring up the tragic backstory that made them that way. As a psych student I could go very deep into the whole nature/nurture debate, but I've found that it's often a lazy way of either explaining that character is actually good all along, or it stigmatizes trauma and mental illness.

Players who jump into every single open thread, including ones that already have 20+ replies and are about to wrap up, then proceed to make everything about their character.

Admins who play favorites and disfavorites, specifically in determining that actions have consequences -- but only for certain users' characters.

Players who intentionally only write with one or two other players. I find I usually get into a rhythm where I have more plots with 1-3 players than the others, but then there are those who close themselves off. In my experience, those are the ones who usually try to cause drama within a site by creating an "us against them" mentality with their group vs. staff.

God, pretty much everything you've all mentioned; though I would take it a step further than @Yume to say that I hate that tone in admins, too, actually. Don't treat me like a kid or like I'm dumb, there's a 100% chance I WILL be exiting out of your site ASAP.

Something even worse though: people who are VERY interested in public, on-board smut. Like, I get it, I have a ship that toes the line a lot, but having full-on, all-details-there, no-holds-barred pornographic smut threads onsite - and often times these members SPECIFICALLY REQUEST SMUT THREADS OR MAKE THEM OPEN - TERRIFIES me. Like how the hell do you have no shame!!!
