What is your dream job?

What was your dream job as a child? What's your dream job now?

As a child I always wanted to be a veterinarian, but I realized in my teenage years that I really don't have the stomach or heart for it. So my dream shifted towards rescue. Currently I am working with dogs at my local SPCA. My dream job is still in the same vein as I would love to run my rescue.

Mine was to be a digital animator for established film companies.  I got to see ones sketching during a trip to "Walt" Disney World.  Unfortunately, I fell ill and had to leave university.

As a child I wanted to be a pediatrician (until sixth grade when dissecting a frog), then a nun (in fourth grade, when my mother, scared by my words and who might have heard them in an atheistic, socialist country, told me that there was a law only for old women after retirement to be able to be nuns 😛 ), then an interpreter. I have always been writing too... and now I am a published writer.

The interpreter part, I got it with the official certification as translator/ interpreter, and with working in European Affairs/ international affairs.

I was sent to study Economics, because that was more of a viable profession, and I ended working in European Affairs/ Project management.

Funny how relevant this is to my struggles IRL right now.

So my biggest dream job is to be a published author. Right now I'm only self published which just doesn't feel the same (and does not pay the bills unless you write smut for a buck each.) So my second biggest dream is to become a freelance editor. Lastly, I want to work in a school library. Already applied for and interviewed for the job but haven't heard back. As I have certification to assist teachers, I could do that but I reaaaaaallly want to work with children on reading and writing in particular, hence library.

But I'd also settle for continuing to foster animals. >.> I've always had a love/hate relationship with that work but it's not a paying job unfortunately.

Reality is an illusion.

I wanted to work at NASA as an astronomer, maybe specifically astrophysics, as I love the stars and it is one of the few things I always go back to eventually. At some point, I decided I also wanted to write books; when I was a kid, we'll suffice it to say my home-life was disturbed, and as I was a child and held zero control over the situation, I escaped in books. I wanted to be that comfort escape for just one other kid, and my life would have meaning.

When I was a teenager, my stupid school board changed the way they'd let teachers teach (read: they wouldn't LET them teach, they were ONLY allowed to teach the tests, not the material itself), and my maths grades dropped drastically. There goes NASA. Bye NASA.

Murica.

Sometimes I want to be a full-time video game developer, but unless I tried making it indie from day one, I'd have to drop back into school and go to war with this stupid education system, and quite frankly, I'm tired of fighting it. I'm currently working on a novel series while I figure out what the heck else to do.

Me, at guidance counselor once: I wanna fix computers.
Counselor: Oh, you need maths then.

When has anyone needed to do maths to swap out a fried hard drive. Never, that's when.

When I was very young, I wanted to be an animator. I went to art school out of state for a year, which was too expensive. When I tried community college out as a backup, I had always like writing in the past, but I then realized how much I loved to write and finished off college with a degree in writing. I don't know that I would necessarily call this a job for myself, but eventually, I'd still like to write and publish a full novel. I just currently lack the motivation.

I also wanted to write stories for video games, specifically RPGs, which is still not totally out of the question. Making games has gotten... less complicated over the years (though it still takes quite a deal of work), but since I can do coding and a bit of art, it's a possibility!

These days I'm a front end web developer, which is fine by me. Despite not going to school for it and learning completely by experience, I feel like it's something I'm good at and that I can help people who are curious about code.

There is one other thing. Not necessarily a dream job, but more like if I had a do-over. I'd consider studying stars, space, and astronomy more as I love the idea of that type of outer exploration. But, similar to @Arceus, I'm terrible at math and cry when I have to do more than complicated addition.

@Zozma, writing and publishing books is good for the soul and it gives you a sense of accomplishment, but you should never expect it to pay the bills. Not in our contemporary society. Just to meet your other, immaterial needs. I have read studies made in several countries, including mine and yours, which led to this conclusion.

Except a few authors of several bestsellers, most published writers do earn money from their daily job - editors, journalists, teachers or other professions. The writing is something extra, which from time to time provide them extra pocket money.

God, there's so many things I want to be! Currently I'm working on going back to school to become a middle school English teacher, but I'd also love to be a guidance counselor for the same age group. But if life were KIND and I were prettier and more talented, I'd love to be a singer or an actress. I also want to be an author like Zozma, but... yeah. Basically I have a lot going on!

Probably won’t surprise many but I wanted to be an arachnapologist. You can blame Black Arachnia from beast wars for that. I ended up being an idiot.

I actually have my dream job. I work for IPS and do design for a living working from home.

  • 1 month later...

When I was a kid, I really wanted to become a forensic pathologist, oddly enough. I thought it was the coolest job and thought I'd get to have cool adventures like on TV shows lol.

Now, my dream job is a software engineer... and I'm halfway through a software engineering master's, but I doubt it'll be completed anytime soon. -__-

Probably either acting on Broadway (not gonna happen. I can't carry a tune in a bucket and what I like is musicals) or being an author. Which I think I have the potential to do but I am intimidated to try. However, I do love the job I do as a clinical social worker so. We'll stick with that!
