Deep Sea 326 Share Posted August 18, 2018 (edited) Y'all. Please. Trust me on this one. I would be more than thrilled to show everyone how to export 2x versions of their graphics and tweak the html to control the display size. Why? Cuz these graphics are fuzzy as shit. I had no idea until I started using my work computer (a Macbook) to browse RP sites during my lunch break, but damn. Damn. Retina be ruinin' all y'all's buttons. All my buttons. It's ruining everything. I can't go back to a regular monitor. I've seen the future, and it's drowning in pixel density. I'm never making 1x graphics for my RPs ever again. CovertSphinx 710 Share Posted August 18, 2018 Do you mean, make all images twice the size of what you need, and manually scale them down for normal view so that in larger screens the images don't get fuzzwuzzy?
Elena 546 Share Posted August 18, 2018 (edited) Why should I make my graphics twice if I need them once? I mean, wouldn't they be exact copies? Or do you want them of different resolutions? Why, if I need only a specific resolution? And why use dohtml? I hate it and I use it almost never. Edited August 18, 2018 by Elena
Kazetatsu 263 Share Posted August 18, 2018 I think its because sometimes you need things in a bigger size due to 1) modern screen resolutions making the standard 1x size look bad, 2) flexibility for reusing/editing images. Its easy to scale things down using code, css, html, whatever, but if you scale things up, the computer needs to guess what the pixels would be, and the image looks either pixelated or blurry, and things just don't look right. by using an image thats 2x the size it should be, it allows you to make the image once, and have some flexibility in how you scale it, while high resolution, and large monitors don't take the hit. Yume 99 Share Posted August 18, 2018 Okay but most rules specifically require an image size. Required image sizes for affiliate graphics (as an example) are not going to be scaled down by the person asking for a specific size, I can almost promise. I get that it's 'easy' to do with html but not everything is being displayed with html - ad posts, etcetc. 2 Some must be warriors that others may live in peace. Popular Post Arceus 1,081 Popular Post Share Posted August 18, 2018 Retina displays have a very sharp-clear display, due to the up of something called pixel density. It describes how many pixels are used in the same amount of space. Retina displays cram more pixels on the screen, so each individual pixel is even smaller than "normal," and the image is sharper. If you've already got double the pixel count, and scaled it down, it looks better. (I.E. images that get scaled up don't look nearly as good as images that get scaled down, same concept. I believe actually resizing it down and saving it that way before using it won't help, because it needs to "resize" back up again on the page on a retina display, so the resizing needs to be done in the HTML.) Unfortunately, this is part of the progression of technology; someday, everyone will have 2x density displays, and nothing will look right at 1x to anyone. In the meantime, though, the rest of the world's got some catching up to do, but it's not a bad thing to get accustomed to if you're interested in doing so (spoiler: I think most won't be). You can set width and height in HTML img tags when giving others your affiliate button code, but several places have their own way of handling buttons, and it's just not global right now. The internet's just not ready for that yet. Personally? I ain't got time for retina optimisation. Still a thing, but, it's not a thing I care about. Popular Post Deep Sea 326 Author Popular Post Share Posted August 18, 2018 ❤️ Wasn't 100% sober when I posted this, lol. I'm personally of the opinion that most websites should be mobile-friendly. Part of mobile-friendliness is being Retina-optimized, since a large number of people use iPhones and iPads. I'm not telling you that to absolutely HAVE to drop everything RIGHT NOW and make 2x/3x scale graphics.... but I think if board owners get into the habit of accommodating sharper displays now, they will reduce the risk of turning away potential users who think the board looks strange or out of date and can't figure out why. Making an image twice is really, really easy - but then, I'm a graphic designer by trade, so it's part of my workflow. I know the export dialogues nearly forwards and backwards. For you guys who only have time to make one set of graphics, I'd suggest upping the PPI/DPI to 144 instead of 72. It should, in most circumstances, work. 1 1 2 1 Glub glub. Popular Post Kit the Human 758 Popular Post Share Posted August 19, 2018 And use CSS useful seeming guide. Where possible, you don't want people with lower res screens needlessly downloading large data hungry images intended for those with high res displays. Well, maybe you do, but those with low download speeds or limited data probably won't appreciate that. 3 1 1 PSI: an Occult Investigations RP Roleplay Architects: Grab a friend (or many friends!) and just write. CovertSphinx 710 Share Posted August 19, 2018 @Deep Sea it's a good thing @Arceus is here to translate for you lmao I actually learned really neat stuff from this, and probably should have been a graphics/coding major rather than a mortuary major. 1

Popular Post Sage 289 Popular Post Share Posted September 2, 2018 I'm just gonna say I bought a new 4k laptop this week and GODDAMN every rp site looks fuzzy af. My screen is only 12.5" but the resolution is 3840x2160. The specs on this machine are insane (#humblebrag?) and it makes your graphics look terrible. At least be using high res images guys.
