There are two leading myths--as far as I know--one that it was discovered by a goatherd named Kaldi who noticed a change in his goats' behavior after eating coffee cherries (it grows red). The other story is similar, but with slavers rather than a goatherd... I think there's a reason people prefer the Kaldi story. In short, yes, coffee is wonderful.
