SMF 2.1 + smc_AutoSuggest issue

Hey all! I'm in the process of getting my board ready to upgrade to SMF 2.1 and in the process I'm updating a few modifications that were made specifically for my forum (with permission from the modification author) so that they'll work with 2.1. Has anyone encountered any issues with the auto suggest feature not working? And any suggestions on how to get it to work? I know it's somehow connected to a particular modification, but I've been staring at the coding for a few hours and I can't figure out what's not clicking.
