Opening it in new tab should be working still because it's in the front-end theme not the admin one. (So default not default_admin.)

Oh, one other thing to try is copying over the default_admin folder in /application/themes from the .zip to your server, it'll replace the admin theme so if, by chance, it did the thing it was doing i

Gotcha - so something is fried. Back to the drawing board.
