true! i think i've just encountered a lot of people who just come into my messages to advertise and then scoot. 

 

but if the situation is appropriate, i don't mind it. especially if the topic is on writing or roleplay. i just don't think  i'm very good at it myself.

I currently find myself in this boat.

 

What has seemed to work best for others is to advertise in generally permissable ways like signatures, and to be careful about placing ads when your site doesn't have guest-posting. ( Let's face it - you're not going to get any fans by pissing people off. )
