Some sites discourage really young or old characters. On some sites they are forbidden, on others they don't find plots. Do you like writing such characters? Why yes or why not? I like writing all kind of characters, as the story requires. Young, old, middle-aged, men, women, boys, girls. I succeeded to NPC babies too when needed. I think it adds realism to the story and its environment, because people in real life do interact with others of all ages. So I have written from babies and toddlers to 50-70 years old characters (yes, for me NPCs are characters too, support characters). Given the life expectancy in the times I am writing in, when 50 is old and 70 is rare, I think I really have people of all ages... And each of them is offering something unique to the story!

So, obviously, you always start small, and after moves and big changes you can expect things to be a bit slow. However, I have noticed a weird pattern in people looking for forums. They don't want to join a small forum that's slowly growing, because they want immediate booming activity. But, how does a forum create that "booming activity" when people refuse to join and help them grow? We have advertised like crazy, affiliated like crazy, and we are still finding that people will browse the forum as guests, but never commit to joining. Those that do join, leave because they don't want to actually put in the work of being part of a growing community. We just did a huge move from Proboards to jcink, so of course, slow periods are to be expected. But my staff and I are pulling out at all the stops to do our best with keeping activity up, creating new threads, events, and perks of joining, but it seems to not be working. Are people not into multi-genre roleplay forums anymore? Is it more now that people want something super specific? My thoughts on creating a multi-genre, open world roleplay forum were to give people the chance to do ANY genre and ANY kind of roleplay they wanted. But, we can't show these potential members activity, when no one even bothers joining to try it out. Everyone has lives outside the forum, so we can't expect the couple active members we have to put the forum above their real lives because that's just ridiculous. So, how do we become an "attractive" forum, to entice people to ACTUALLY register instead of just viewing as guests? Any advice would be awesome. Thank you so much! ^^ ❤️

ASK MOUSIE ANYTHING I pretty much haunt boards like this in search of places to give advice, and new documentations I can write. I'd like to get an idea of what questions people have about anything/everything related to forum RP that I might be able to help with. Thus, I invite you to ask me anything! No question too silly, too dumb, or too out there. Feel free to use the anonymous function if you're not comfortable with having it attached to your username. I've been a board admin since 2003, with a break there between 2013 and 2017. During that gap, I continued to roleplay and manage communities---just outside of the forum RP space. My longest-running RP forum was seven years from opening to hiatus, and has been brought back online because it kind of felt like I was missing an arm or leg without it. In that time, I've encountered all sorts of things: Firing my whole staff Finding my "board philosophy" Ejecting toxic members On-board OOC drama Broken RP partnerships Learning to skin.. multiple times Changing board software Adding/removing features Running contests Running board-wide plots Establishing a strong community Advertising like a boss Surviving quiet periods Recurring ghost members Closing the board Reviving the board Investigating board issues Admin burn-out And so much more... Absolutely any questions are okay! About my board, my style, the RP forum sphere in general, particular trends, or even advice on a scenario you're facing. I'm here to help!

I was wondering how people deal with members that come in just for the check, post the minimum to pass it and they go back off into the sunset? I've gotten a complaint about this due to the members in question holding very popular canons. Anonymous poster hash: ca7a5...4f3

Activity checks are probably my least favorite thing to do but I have to hold them. We just turned 3 weeks old and so we haven't actually had one yet but in our rules, we say once every three months. Do you think that's fair? Also since we have a fandom board I was wondering how others dealt with canons and if they had different requirements for activity checks? Or really just checks in general. My biggest fear is someone will sign in and post in the checks and then disappear. I'm leaning towards them having a certain amount of posts in the last month, how do you guys go about it?

How do you handle the dropped plots? That has always been my big gripe when someone poofs. You have relationships, plots and other interactions that are now suddenly dead in the water. its a reality of how we play/write but what do guys do when the activity check clears out half the characters. Restart the pots? Pretend relationships didn't happen?

I don't know how common a problem this is but It absolutely drives me insane, and particularly right now. I'm a pretty lenient admin, so if someone misses something then I just shoot them a PM, let them know and wait for them to fix it. I'm probably a little too lenient because I will do this several times. Especially on a new site when I'm trying to build a member base I want to be accommodating and helpful. But what do you do when a member is blatantly either ignoring or not understanding the simplest rules? Example: The number one rule on my sites is 1. Registration. Please register each character an account as Firstname Lastname just like that. NO OCC/ALIAS accounts. Applications must be completed as coded. I had a member who registered with an Alias account. They posted their application under the alias account. They included our 'rules phrase' in their application indicating they'd read the rules so I PMed them quoting the rule. Given them the benefit of the doubt that they just might not understand, I even wrote it out for them indicating Alias accounts weren't allowed, that we had a section in the mini profile for the alias, so could they please correct the user name to their characters full name 'insert me writing example of the character's fullname' (not their nickname) because there was also section in the mini-profile where the nickname can be indicated. So they 'corrected' their name but instead just to the characters one-word nickname. So I had to PMed them again and basically reiterate the same point a second time. Eventually, they got it right, and it was more or less fine (except they're using a different alias than the one they're listed so I'm kind of confused about that) Then, same member asked 'Can we used another site's application template and just post it here' again... I pointed back to rule #1 Fourth time's the charm? Member has now posted a new application, for a canon character for the site. Except they posted the application under their current character's account instead of creating a new account. So this is literally the Fourth time I've had to direct them back to our First rule in a couple weeks. Am I being a total pushover? XD

So I've recently seen a lot of this sort of behavior in a couple groups I Mod for. Members submit new characters with powers or abilities which are either too powerful, not suited for the setting, or are blatantly breaking a rule. When Admin asks the member to edit the ability, set guidelines for it, or limit in some fashion, the member responds with, "If you don't let me have this ability as-is, I quit." The most recent "Gimme or I quit!" response I received was after telling a member that we would allow him/her to have the overpowered ability for his/her character, but that it must only be used with permission from those people he/she is RPing with. The other admin and I thought that this was a fair compromise. If the members this character was RPing with were okay with the use of the ability, then we were okay with it too. Easy, right? But this member threw a fit and followed it up with the above-mentioned threat. We generally tell these members, "It's your choice if you'd rather quit, but (rule) applies to everyone, and we feel this is the best compromise in this situation. Let us know what you decide." Have any of you noticed this sort of behavior trending with any of your applicants? How do you and your admin handle it? Just wanted a little input! Thanks guys!

I'm sure we all know the cycle. You start a forum with maybe one or two interested parties and you start advertising your site. Meanwhile, you and your buddies are RPing and hoping that your site gathers at least a few other people to play with you! But as folks visit your site, and they see that you have only a few people playing, they say, "You don't have enough members. I'm not joining a site that doesn't have lots of members!" and they leave -- even if you and your friends are RPing daily, and in many different places! So no one will join your site because it only has a few members - and yet it can't get more members because no one joins! Aside from advertising your site everywhere you possibly can, I'm hoping we can share some ideas on how we've managed to encourage those members to consider joining even if your current member base is small. I'm wondering: 1. For those of you whose RPs have several members, how did you break that cycle? 2. What are your thoughts on individual members creating multiple OOC accounts with active IC sub-accounts, just to artificially inflate the members list? 3. If you've tried holding "Grand Opening" events or large group plots, what did you find worked best for you? 4. Do you have other suggestions to break that cycle?
