  1. Text: So Shiny So Chrome Mad Max RPG (If this can't all fit, just the site name is fine) Images Requested: Sponsor button please Size: 88x31 Colors: Please use a color palette chosen from the site's default banner To be used on: So Shiny, So Chrome Other: I would love a button that's a GIF, if possible ❤️ The font used in the linked banner is called Apocalypse Grunge, from dafont.com
  2. This is an Avatar Specific Topic Your Graphic Mod here is working on an Avatar dump for the pre-made graphic section. These will be free use for players to use for whatever reason. This is a quick little survey to find out what kind of things people would like to have available here. Things like signatures and site banners etc will be included eventually as well. What character type depictions are you interested in (i.e. human, dragon, mermaids etc)? Do you prefer complex or simple images? Colorful or black/white? Any playby recommendations? Any images you would like to suggest?
  3. I've really wanted to use an image as a background for my website's nodes (xenforo speak for forums.) I think when done right, they are gorgeous and very much add to the feel/atmosphere of a site. Many of you have gorgeous images representing your settings or forums. I've been tinkering with them as I have the Theme House add on, Nodes. The issue I am running into is this: node/forum font description color is white or light grey. It means I have to use some very dark images for it to not be too busy and allow the forum titles, icons and descriptions be visible. I've tinkered around with various photoshop actions, .psd's, lowering brightness, levels etc and can't for the life of me find something that works right with the theme. Should I stick with something that has a gradient or no color /matching node background for most of it and tuck a small image to the very right? (Iconish size?) Is there a way to darken and image to make font still readable but not ruin the image to be almost unseen? How do forum image formed? Tips? Tricks? Favorite tutorials? Actions? Advice? (You can visit my forum in sig. It feels wrong plugging it in the post when I already do via signature.) ^example of an image I tried using as our "Repository" (Knowledge base) forum/node background. My instant reaction to it was, "Thanks. I hate it." Even that was "too busy," for the text. Thank you and have a wonderful, stress free day!

  6. So one thing I always see is a big difference in the size of avatars everywhere. I remember when there was a day, long before mini-profiles and all that jazz, that there was a standard size to avatars. Hell, I remember the size it was 150x200. Now avatars have no standard size and it bloody-well drives me NUTS! Something that I like to do is make avatars and donate them for others to use but with non-standard avatar sizes this has become impossible. Here on the Initiative we have a size that sticks, 250x250. We only changed this from the rectangle version we had before because it was no longer support (however I have figured out a way to get it to work we just aren't going back). That being said, square avatars are only common on resource sites. This thread is primarily to talk about how you feel about avatars, what is your preferred avatar size and how you feel about the increasing size of avatars when mobile devices are becoming more common. Give me your feedback. I don't like the larger sized avatars, 250x250 is even on the larger size but I know it works for this site and I was reclaiming the lost pixels in width by adding them there. I find mini-profiles a little daunting but I will use them with necessary as they are pretty they just feel needlessly complicated for a player to add a place for details that can be better displayed in a different manner.
  7. This thread is to share a link to your favorite fonts. Fonts that you just can't get enough of and love so much. http://www.dafont.com/bleeding-cowboys.font

    Spotlight Image

Hey guys, I hate to be a bother, but I've recently updated This Is War's directory listing to include a spotlight image for the banner since we won a place for June. However, it seems to have caused a little hiccup in displaying This Is War on the spotlight section of the banner. Could someone possibly help get that taken care of? @Morrigan? If you need our listing, here it is just in case:
  9. Does anybody know or can estimate how expensive a digital wallpaper commission would be? Like, something that can be used as the background of a website like these
  10. I am dumb in this field, and I know it. I am trying to search public domain images depicting either mariachis in specific costumes, or traditional Mexican dancers, and my google, despite me searching for mariachis public domain gives me things which I am sure they are not in the public domain yet (e.g. the painter Jesús Helguera died in 1971, so definitely his paintings are not in the public domain). How can I be sure that what I use (assuming I find something to like) really is in the public domain?
  11. So I have a topic for times you borked up your coding- what about the times you did something dumb with your graphics? Just yesterday I was making the image you see in my signature now, and I was going through the process of saving it. I was having a voice chat with @SusieQ, and so naturally I was narrating all of this to her because everything I do is intensely interesting and everyone needs to know about it. "Am I sure I want to close this image without saving it?" the prompt asks me. I'm thinking "Will I want to change the text on there later?" and decide that yes, I will. And because I was too busy yammering on about nothing, I clicked- yes! AND CLOSED THE IMAGE WITHOUT SAVING. OTL
  12. When making macros, how do you guys pick your "perfect" button size? I've always done things through trial and error, but unfortunately that's pretty much left me resizing and redoing countless times before coming up with something I like. So I was wondering if somebody had a different way of doing things. Do you have a pre-set size that you just use, or a particular button style that you stick to and just "skin over" the template? Do you scratch it from the get-go and just adjust as necessary when you put it on the board? Use the original macros as a sizing guide and reskin them?
  13. I'm marking this as a graphics topic, though I suppose some coding might actually be involved in it, too. Anyway! What makes an ideal header for you? By that I mean what do you like to see in one? What is your idea of a perfect header? For me, I want an image that conveys what the site is about as best as possible. Once upon a time, I used to really enjoy big images, but now I like them better as being squat and wide. I think the name of the forum should always be on there as well, and a brief description of the forum is also always good. Lastly, I always want the image (or the name of the forum, at least) to link to the index. To me, that's just what makes the most sense; I don't want to have to scroll forever to get to the content of the site, I don't want to have to guess what the site is about, and I want the site to be easy to navigate as well.
  14. So as technology moves forward and we get more hi-resolution devices things are starting to become more high def. I sit here and visit the Initiative on my mobile device and realize I need to start optimizing for high resolution items. So do you think about mobile devices in your design? Are you starting to become more moibile friendly in your design? Did you even know there was a difference? Have you ever viewed your site in mobile view before? Do you have questions on how to design to be more high resolution friendly?
  15. This is not something I've thought about for years, mainly because since I had internet at home, I no longer needed to print out documents from web-pages at the library and bring them home. When I ran my Star Wars fan fiction site a number of years ago, I always made sure that visitors could print out stories quite easily if they wished so that they could read stories off-line if they wanted to. I've always found it much easier to concentrate on long pieces of text if it had been printed out rather than on a screen. (For this this reason, it's very unlikely that I will ever seriously bother with Kindle and other e-book formats.) I've found that for various reasons, it will be easier for me to work from print outs again (mainly because I need to share a computer and don't always have access to it, and when I have quite a number of characters to write posts for, whether they be my own, or starters/replies to other peoples characters it would be easier to have an hard copy available so that I can use them for reference when I'm not on a computer. However, I have found that boards aren't always printer-friendly - they can have complex layouts which, while looking at them on a screen, looks great, but literally wastes ink and paper when you print them out. I've also found that sometimes, the layout can be too wide on a screen and if you try to print it out portrait orientation, large portions of the site are cut off (typically, if you print them out landscape, you use far more paper than you'd need to if it could be printed out in portrait.) It is a bit tedious to copy and paste things you want to print out into word, or some other word processing software so you print out what you need to and don't have portions of it cut off. Do admins consider making sure that members can print out content easily and without wasting lots of paper and ink.
  16. So, I realized last week that I really needed to find my own images and stocks to offer if I want someone to take up my graphic requests. I even played around on GIMP myself on some mock-up ideas but really, I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm on a deadline (Oct 14th). I remember seeing somewhere about morguefiles and pixabay. A friend of mine showed me how to look on deviantart for textures and paper stocks. What resources do you guys generally use for free vectors, stocks, images, and patterns? Bonus points if they offer late 18th century and India stuffs. I love anything relating to India religions, ruined archways, silhouettes of elephants, artistic rendering of peacocks, tigers, marbleized texturing, India motifs / stencils (including a conch), and 18th century stuff that is obvious like maybe fashion or riding a carriage.
  17. So I was thinking about gifs and how they are used and I was wondering what everyone's opinion on them are? For the most part, I personally don't mind gifs. I prefer that they be in places that I'm not staring at them at all times but I can live with them being in places that I can turn off. (for example I can turn off individual signatures here on DF so if the gif is too flashy I don't have to stare at it). Of course there are drawbacks to that, what if it changes? I will not be able to see such a change. Overall, I don't mind gifs but I don't like seeing them everywhere all the time for all of the things. What is your opinion? Do you have methods that you use to ignore images that you don't like? Will you join a site that has them? Will you join a site that prohibits them? Will you show me your favorite gif? My fave Gif is:
  18. Ok so I've been debating with myself over this for a while. Some sites are ok with a hand drawn picture of your character, but most require actual photo of a real person. My question is, which do you guys prefer seeing? Personally, I like hand drawn characters better than actual photo. A photo isn't hard to snag off of Google or Bing images. When someone has a hand drawn picture instead, there was someone who put some time and effort into perfecting that picture to make it look just right. I like knowing there was more effort going into the character than just copy and paste. Recently I tried joining someone's role play with a character that was hand drawn and was rejected because it wasn't "a picture of a real wolf" and told me I could join it when I "got a picture of a real wolf." There are a lot of details in my main character that no photo of a real wolf will ever be able to show. Which is the other reason I like hand drawn characters, because you can add a lot more fine grained details in your picture than an actual photo.
  19. So after having seen Marvel's Captain America 3 / Civil War... I started to think about getting a design done for Endless Fight. I haven't really had a ton of time to sit down and develop themes in a while (work having consumed much of my time) and so I've become a bit out of practice (I've forgotten chunks of what I used to know) and am having a hard time deciding what to actually do. I have a couple ideas and a bit of a prototype started but I'm not 100% sure where to go from there. So here's a screenshot of what I have... And I've attached one of what I'd like to have. So then, thoughts? Suggestions? Input?
  20. I'm making this thread in response to @Morrigan's discussion on Imgur and their recent crackdown on hot linking. Imgur has blocked Jcink from using their service recently (source). While I only do a browse or word search when looking through TOS, Imgur's terms of service is not for image hosting. Wait, or is it? Whatever. It doesn't matter. The bottom line is: You can't use Imgur if you want to link to your images. Basically, Imgur is for viewing the most viral images on the internet, not hosting your graphics. You can view their TOS here. It's not too long. But just in case you're a professional potato (like me), I'll quote a major point in their TOS: So there you have it. Anyway, I'm sure a lot of you, like me, are bummed. Because honestly, their short links is what sold me. I spent a lot of money on upgrading my account to have access to unlimited uploads. And even though they said that they have removed the limits and stopped the paid, upgraded account service, my account is still being restricted based on their old restrictions. Ugh. So for me, that's still frustrating but I'm not the type to cry over split milk. However I'm sure that some of you might be looking for a new place to host your images. So what are your options? First, and foremost, if you're looking for a place to upload your layout images, then you should be looking at your forum host first. A lot of forum hosts, including Jcink, offer to host your images for your community. In some cases, it's free. In other cases, you'll have to pay to have more storage, but generally they give you enough space to upload what you need for your forum. I highly recommending uploading all your images for your layout with your forum host. Not only will your community load faster (because it's not calling and retrieving information from a third party), but it'll help with the load times on your forum. Load times are important. And it becomes a make or break factor with some members that have a slower/non-priority connection speed. Other image hosting sites can be found by going to google and using your magic little fingers. I found several websites that I will kind of link to below, but as I'm a professional potato, I only skim TOS and search these policies for keywords. Yeah, I know, you can criticize me all you want, but if the service leaves me scratching my head by either hunting down what their site is about, or if they market it to true image hosting (when it may not be the case), then that's on them. I'll still link to the TOS's for you to do the homework, because I'm only liable for me and mine. Here's a few image hosting options I found: Tinypic -- "TinyPic® is a photo and video sharing service that lets you easily upload, link, and share your images and videos on MySpace®, eBay®, Orkut Scrapbooks, blogs, and message boards." -- [ TOS ] I browsed through it and didn't see any kind of restrictions, other than the content you "post" has to adhere to international laws. It's owned by PhotoBucket now. Photobucket -- "Photobucket offers photo and video storage, story creation products and sharing services (collectively referred to as "Photobucket Services") that are offered via the Site, other social media, mobile services and mobile applications." -- [ TOS ] I didn't see anything related to "forum/message boards" so this could be an open field. I highly recommend scanning this TOS. It's not too long, but there are vague points. Also, if you're using this for image hosting layouts, I suggest having your folders on private lock down, otherwise other users can freely redistribute whatever they find. Photobucket also sells prints, so this could be an issue if you don't private/lock your folders. Imageshack -- "Sharing is easy and you have full control of privacy. You can share a single image or even a whole album. Use us for business. We will host your images for your site of forum. Upload quickly and get any link type you need. Discover new inspirations with our follow feature. Follow other photographers, friends and even your family." -- [ TOS ] The first line in this TOS is "ImageShack is here to serve all of your image hosting needs..." Imagevenue -- "Free Image Hosting for bloggers, message board users, and eBay sellers." -- [ TOS ] Short and to the point. Postimage -- "Postimage.org was founded in 2004 to provide forums with an easy way to upload images for free. Postimage is a very simple, fast, reliable free image host. It's perfect for linking to auctions, message boards, blogs, and other websites. " -- [ TOS ] Short and to the point. You can discuss other options as well, because I'm sure it's well worth it if they are true image hosting sites for general purposes. If you want to post your art/professional photography, there are other options out there. Stick to "image hosting" sites that are basically art portfolios, like deviantArt and Weasyl. If you're looking for a place to host your images for your layouts, then I suggest looking into your forum host first. Other than that, Imgur was a lesson learned, yeah? I also suggest taking a look at this list of photo-sharing websites that I found on the infamous Wikipedia. If you scroll down, they touch on the kind of features each site has and they compare them. Might be userful if you're looking for something that lets you organize your stuff.
